Executive Summary
Group Bridge Design
Using only 1/16" aluminum alloy, either 6061-T651 or 6061T0 and aluminum rivets, our goal was to make a bridge that was
light, but could hold a large load. In order for the bridge to be

deemed successful, it had to meet certain specifications. For
starters, the bridge had to be able to span an 8.5-inch wide “gorge”
with its feet set on two 3 X 5 support areas (oriented with 5-inch
direction parallel to the paper river with 3 inch perpendicular to the
river). The bridge also had to be high enough to allow a 3X5 inch

rectangle to go under the bridge—5 inches horizontal, 3 inches
vertical. Beyond all of the aforementioned, the bridge has to
support the load without visible deformation or shape change.
Our Goal
Simply put our goal was to make the a bridge that was as
light as possible while still being able to safely handle loads in
excess of 350 pounds. In order to achieve this goal we used Ansys
Safety
Factor
8.1, finite elements analysis software, to guide us as we searched
for the optimum design.

defined as the shear force per unit area applied to a
