United Nations Road Safety
Collaboration
In April 2004, the United
Nations General Assembly resolution A/RES58/289
on “Improving global road safety” invited WHO,
working in close cooperation with the United
Nations regional commissions, to act as coordinator
on road safety issues across the United Nations
system.

Key Issues and Challenges –
Technical Considerations
Science
Professions
IRMRC
• Lack of evidence based
approaches
• Combines a sphere of
disciplines and stakeholders
Motivation
• Organisations are actively
pursuing good practices
Benchmarks
• Benchmarking initiatives
growing
Systems
• Systems and tools are
evolving and being tested
Other Considerations
Safe System framework
Roles of government – as an employer,
vehicle purchaser, regulator, industry support
Need to recognise the need for a
business case
Differing needs and conditions by
sectors, size, operating environments,
resources
Lack of involvement of low income
countries
