The Giver vs. Modern Society
Ever want to live in a perfect society? Most
of us wish we could. However, the reality is
that there is no perfect society. If there
were, it would probably look something like
the dystopian society in The Giver. While
there are some similarities to our society, it
turns out there are many more differences.
Thesis: The Giver Society is different from
modern society in three ways: there is no
lying, they must use precise language, and
they practice ‘Release.’
Rule in The Giver Society: No Lying
TLQC: When Jonas gets his assignment,
he realizes he can lie, which goes against
the rules of the society. He explains, “He
had never, within his memory, been
tempted to lie. Asher did not lie. Lily
did not lie. His parents did not lie. No
one did” (Lowry 71).
Why is this important?
• If everyone knows the truth, there are no
secrets from the government. This allows the
government to have better control of their
society.
Vs. Rule in modern society: “Freedom of
Speech” It’s ‘o.k.’ to lie.
• 1st Amendment gives us
the Freedom of Speech.
• We have a choice to lie
or not to lie.
Why is this important?
• Having this right allows us to express ideas, even
if these ideas disagree with those in control.
• This protects us from the government
controlling everything we say.
