Student Services
• We are a university department, separate
from the school dedicated to providing
student support.
• Students can come to us in complete
confidence about anything.
• We have offices at each site.
• If we can’t help, the chances are we know
someone who can.

I want to find a part-time job.
Where can I find local childcare?
How can I learn to take better lecture notes?
I need to extend my student visa.
How can I get more involved in the local community?
My housemates are driving me up the wall.
I’ve run out of money.
I’ve got flu and my essay is due in tomorrow.
I think I’m on the wrong course.
I feel desperately lonely and don’t have anyone to talk to.
Where can I find Halal meat locally?
My tutor thinks I might be dyslexic.

Who do we help?
• It is a relatively even gender split on who uses
the services.
• The majority of our users across our services
(77–87%) are undergraduates.
• Far fewer part-time students use our
resources (on average between 5–22%) across
the services.
Who do we help?
Counselling
• The highest proportion of students accessing the
counselling service comes from the School of Health
Professions (14%).
• A disproportionately high age group accessing
counselling is the 21–24 year-old group (44%) which
comprises 17% of the university population.
Who do we help?
Careers
• The highest uptake of advice from the Careers service comes
from Education (14%), Brighton Business School (12%),
Environment and Technology (12%).
• Our highest users are from year 1 (45%) followed by years 2
(27%) and 3 (24%)
• Some schools make virtually no use of the Careers service:
Arts & Architecture, CENTRIM and CLT amongst the lowest.
Who do we help?
Student Advice Service (formerly Welfare)
• 65% of our home/UK students and 30% of our
overseas students have accessed the Student
Advice Service.
Who do we help?
Disability and dyslexia
• 9% of the university population has a declared
disability. Of this number, 95% access the DDT
services.
