Debate: Responding to Choices

Instructions: o o The room has now been divided into two parts. One side of the room will make Choice A regarding a topic, the other side of the room will make Choice B. o You will have 5 minutes to prepare a defense for your choice. o The entire side of the room must participate.

*Prior to seeing your choices, consider all the roads that a person might decide to travel.*

Round One: Family Your mother and brother find drugs in your room and begin to understand that YOU are dealing drugs to purchase things they cannot afford.

Round One: Family Choice A

You come clean with your family, own up to your dealing, and make a plan to get out of the game. You plan to never deal again.

Choice B

You ignore your family and blow off their warnings against the dangers of drug dealing. You move out and begin to hang with your ‘real’ family.

Round Two: Parenthood Your youngest son begins to wear clothes and shoes that you know you could not afford for him to wear. When you ask him where he is getting the money, he tells you he is a local DJ that is doing well.

Round Two: Parenthood Choice A

You trust your son and believe that he is a good boy, even though he has never expressed interest in being a DJ before now.

You doubt that your son is telling the truth and you search his room.

Round Three: School You are failing most of your classes because you are simply not putting forth the effort to show up and work. Your mom is starting to question you about your performance.

Round Three: School Choice A

You tell your mother that school is too hard and that you are going to drop out and get a job.

Choice B

You fess up to not going to school and make a plan with your mom to increase your grades.

Round Four: Authority You decide, along with a friend, to tag a building with spray paint. The cops see what you are doing and attempt to arrest you.

Round Four: Authority Choice A

You trip your friend and use him as bait for the cops. You run and hide, but the cops are still looking for you.

Choice B

You allow the cops to reprimand you. You are incredibly embarrassed and scared, but you plan to never tag again.
