I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”

- Bill Bright, 1951
Movements Everywhere
so that everyone knows someone
who truly follows Jesus
Movements Anywhere?
It is possible to have a very
healthy and fruitful ministry of
evangelism and discipleship
without ever becoming a
movement.
From your experience, would
you agree or disagree?
Why?

Let’s Grow From
Ministry
To Movement.
The church in Antioch
birthed movements
everywhere that
changed the world.
Small Group Bible Study
“…men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch
and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them
the good news about the Lord Jesus. The Lord’s
hand was with them, and a great number of
people believed and turned to the Lord….”
Acts 11:19-30 13:1-5
15:30-41
 What happened at Antioch?
 What principles can we take away?
T.O.
Mark #1:
Connecting lost people to Jesus.




The message was simple and clear: the
Lord Jesus
Innovation: Multiple cultures reached out
to multiple cultures.
The hand of the Lord was with them.
Great numbers believed & turned to the
Lord (2x).
Mark #2: Life-changing discipleship






News about this reached the ears of the
Jerusalem church (500 km away)
Barnabas came, witnessed God’s grace, rejoiced,
and encouraged them to remain true to Jesus
amid explosive ministry
Barnabas & Saul personally invested one year
Emphasis on Barnabas’ character (morally good,
full of Holy Spirit and faith, encourager)…
…is linked to more fruit: “considerable numbers”
Life-change earned disciples a name: Christians
Mark #3: Rapidly Multiplying Leaders

Team leadership from the outset (men from Cyprus
and Cyrene, Barnabas immediately went for Saul,
prophets from Jerusalem, gift sent to elders, teachers
listed, Judas and Silas)



Leaders ministered together, prayed together,
fasted together, and traveled together.
Leaders obeyed the Spirit and sent (released)
people as God led.
Strong, opinionated leaders remained focused on
the mission even in sharp disagreement over
details.
Mark #4:
Generous Giving of Local Resources




Disciples (not just church leaders) were
informed of real needs outside their own
church and city.
Ownership. Each disciple determined to send
a gift based on their own means.
The disciples were quick to send people and
finances as the Spirit led.
Partnership. Financial gifts were carried by
leaders in one location to leaders in another.

The Result?
 Movements
Everywhere.
Within 20 years Antioch
became the premier
world-changing missions
sending base.
One Example: Thessalonica

“You became imitators of us and of the
Lord; in spite of severe suffering, you
welcomed the message with the joy
given by the Holy Spirit. And so you
became a model to all the believers in
Macedonia and Achaia. The Lord’s
message rang out from you not only in
Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in
God has become known everywhere.”
- 1 Thessalonians 1:6-8
What Is A Movement?


God working through a team of likehearted disciples to Win, Build, and
Send toward fulfillment of the Great
Commission.
Measurable results. Over time, people
in prayerful dependence on God’s
grace will take action. This results in
the following four characteristics:
A Movement Is…

God working through a team of like-hearted
disciples to Win, Build, and Send toward
fulfilling the Great Commission, resulting in:
1. Connecting the Lost to Jesus
2. Life-changing Discipleship
3. Multiplying Student Leaders
4. Generating Self-sustaining

What Is A Multiplying Student
Leader?

A Spirit-filled disciple who
mobilizes and mentors others
to lead.
One must decide where he wants his
ministry to count – in the momentary
applause of popular recognition or in
the reproduction of his life in a few
chosen men who will carry on his work
after he is gone….Better to give a year
or so to one or two who learn what it
means to conquer for Christ than to
spend a lifetime with a congregation
just keeping the program going.

Why Don’t We See Movements?
1.
2.
We substitute evangelistic activity for
bold, personal, loving proclamation
of Jesus as a lifestyle.
We allow training – even very good
training - to replace the lost art of
life-on-life disciple-making.
3.
4.
Insecure leaders try too hard to do
their best, maintain control for too
long, and hesitate to give problemsolving ownership away to students.
We complain about not having
enough staff or money or ___ to reach
the students on our campus, rather
than believing God to provide most of
what we need from our local setting,
then sending and giving even from
our lack.

To rapidly grow leaders:
Help people identify real
needs, then give
decision-making power
to the grassroots level
(students & volunteers).
Equip and release.
Who’s A Leader?
“Be the first wherever there is
a sacrifice to be made,
a self-denial to be practiced,
or an impetus to be given.”
Amy Carmichael, missionary who spent
53 years in India without a furlough
True spiritual movements
are both intentional
and organic (grown by God).

To generate resources:
Shift ministry focus from
local to the whole world.
This instantly reproduces
Great Commission DNA.
Our primary interest is not
how many students are
in our meetings.
Our question is
“How many movements
are in our students?”
Essential Activities



Evangelism and discipleship are essential
activities of Spirit-filled believers.
Evangelism and discipleship are
foundational to movement building, but
they are insufficient to sustain a
movement.
Multiplying of leaders and the generation
of resources requires greater intentionality
and risky faith sustained over seasons of
ministry.

God Makes Us Ready
“Then go for Me to China.”
- God to 17-year old Hudson Taylor
On Sept 19, 1853, Hudson Taylor
was the only passenger on the
freight ship Dumfries sailing for
China. The voyage from Liverpool
lasted 23 weeks. His journey of
radical faith changed the course
of missions history.
He had just turned 21 years old.
