A yard-keeper
 This profession was
very respectful in prerevolutionary Russia. A
yard-keeper even had
the right to hire out the
lodging while the
owner was away.
A chimney sweep
 This profession is more
typical of Western
Europe. But still there
were 111 chimney
sweeps in SaintPetersburg in 1896.
A coachman and a cabman
A water carrier
A laundress
 It is one of the first
female professions.
Their services were in
great demand but they
were very cheap. The
laundress’s life was
very hard.
A lamplighter
 A lamplighter, historically, was
an employee of a town who lit
street lights. Lights were lit each
evening, generally by means of a
wick on a long pole. At dawn,
they would return to put them
out using a small hook on the
same pole. Early street lights
were generally candles, oil, and
similar consumable liquid or
solid lighting sources with wicks.

Another lamplighter duty was to
carry a ladder and renew the
candles, oil, or gas mantles.
A lamplighter
 A lamplighter had to
light up about 150
lanterns. He had to
walk several miles. The
lights were lit from the
1-st of September till
the 1-st of May. There
were about 6000 oil
lamps in Moscow in
1848.
