Karen Brown Scholarship
School of Social Work -- Texas State University
This scholarship has been established by the friends and
colleagues of Dr. J. Karen Brown in recognition of her
distinguished contributions to the TXST School of Social Work.
The scholarship acknowledges Dr. Brown’s commitment to
social work practice with vulnerable children and families.

Award: One $1500 scholarship for a BSW student

Eligibility: Enrolled in academic year 2015-2016

Basic selection criteria:
 Commitment to practice with vulnerable children and families
documented by past and/or present activities and future goals
 Current BSW student or accepted into BSW degree program
(verified by SSW office)


Minimum GPA of 3.0 and good standing status (verified)
Recipient must maintain both a minimum 3.0 GPA and good
standing status during the award period (verified)
 Application should include a cover letter to the Scholarship
Committee, resume with student ID and TXST email only, and
a maximum three-page, double-spaced essay addressing both
the basic and preferred criteria


Preferred selection criteria:
 Bi-lingual proficiency in Spanish & English or progress toward
becoming bi-lingual and culturally responsive practice values
 Financial need
 Professional career goal of policy practice
 Intention to apply for SW licensure upon graduation

by Monday May 4, 2015 at 5pm. Late or partial applications will not be
considered. Questions should be directed to Dr. Catherine Hawkins,
Professor of Social Work, at [email protected]. All scholarships will be
announced no later than July 31, 2015 via Texas State email.
