WARNING!
There is no practical element to this session.
Do as much or as little as you feel comfortable with!
But do pay attention and take notes and share in the experience of
those around you!
* Please do let me know if you have any specific injuries or health concerns
2
By the end of this session you will be
able to:
• Show an awareness of the main areas of activity in PE across
KS1 and KS2 and where they can be used in the curriculum
• Evaluate the appropriateness and balance within their own
curriculum and after school provision
• Know how to meet the learning intentions under the new
curriculum for PE and how these vary from the previous
curriculum
• Identify the distinctive contribution of each area of activity
to the PE curriculum
• Be aware of some alternative models for PE curriculums and
be able to identify strategies to improve your own curriculum
and OSHL structure

The old National Curriculum for PE
KS1:

and gymnastics
KS2:
Pupils should be taught dance, games,
gymnastics plus two from: swimming,
athletics and OAA (swimming must be
chosen if not delivered in KS1)
7
The New Curriculum for PE, September 2013
• develop competence to excel in a broad range of
physical activities
• are physically active for sustained periods of time
• engage in competitive sports and activities with
emphasis on fairness and respect.
• lead healthy, active lives.
Key Stage One is essentially the same with an
emphasis on fundamental movement skills and

Worksheet One Activity
Outcome: Identify factors within and
outside your school affecting PE
curriculum design
Task: Now rank them in order
according to the extent that they
impact your current curriculum.
11
Educationally Sound Principles
Meeting the new National Curriculum
– NOT QCA!
Meeting pupils’ needs
Taking account of the expected
quality of PE with the new funding….
12
Food for Thought…
Do what you’ve always done and
you’ll get what you’ve always
got.
To get something different……..
…….. do anything different!

Important note: All curriculum
maps above are from national
curriculum 2000 - 2013
The activities from slide nine are
what you are mapping with the
new 2014 curriculum using the
blank sheet on the handouts.
A word about monitoring and
evaluating!
Evaluation without monitoring is pure fiction
Monitoring without evaluation is a waste of
time
Evaluation with monitoring can change the
world…… and show that you’ve done so!
24
Other Solutions
Aerobic mornings
Active playtimes
Speed stacking
5 minute bursts
Making up for swimming
25
Demonstrate Your Impact
Initial measurement
– As early as possible
Involvement of others in collecting
evidence
– Vital for ownership and spreads workload
Involvement of others in evaluating
progress and impact
– Helps others understand objectives
Reporting and celebrating
– Often forgotten…plan the celebration and then
make sure you get there!
26
Know where
you are and
what you want
to achieve
Measure the
difference
Set specific
objectives
Implement your
strategies
Visualise signs
of success
Take a baseline
Identify
strategies that
will work
