CONDITIONAL SENTENCES
Hello and welcome to a fantastic
trip around my magical world, the
world of conditional sentences. I
will answer your questions if you
have any doubts. All on board!!!
2
There are three basic
conditional types:
Type 1: If you live in a beautiful place, you will be happy.
Type 2: If you lived in a beautiful place, you would be
happy.
Type 3: If you had lived in a beautiful place, you would have been
happy.

POSSIBLE,FUTURE CONDITION
•IF CLAUSE:Present Simple-1st vb:
•IF IT RAINS
•MAIN CLAUSE: Future Simple-will+1st vb
I WILL STAY AT HOME
 Using the first conditional
 The first conditional is used to
talk about things which are
possible in the present or the
future -- things which may
happen;
 Romanian: indicativ viitor-voi
merge
IF IT RAINS, I WILL STAY AT HOME
IF HE PLAYS FOOTBALL, HE WILL BE A FOOTBALLER
If it's sunny, we'll go to the park.
 Explanation:
 Maybe it will be sunny -- that's
possible.
IF HE GETS GREAT IDEAS, HE WILL INVENT NEW
THINGS
IF HE HAS ENOUGH TIME, HE WILL TRAVEL ROUND THE WORLD
The order of the main clause and the
conditional clause may change:
If I have enough
money,
conditional clause
I will go to US.
main clause
I will go to U.S. if I have enough money.
main clause conditional clause
Use the pictures to make
conditional sentences:
If he
cries…
 If you ________ an apple every day,
you'll be very healthy.
 She ________
completely different
 if she cuts her
hair.(LOOK)
 If you don't put so much sugar in your coffee, you

IMPROBABLE CONDITION
IF CLAUSE:past simple-2nd form of the
verb/verb+ed:
IF I WENT TO SCHOOL
MAIN CLAUSE:would+infinitive:

 The second conditional is used
to talk about things which are
improbable or uncertain;
 Romanian:conditional prezent:
as merge

PAST ,UNREAL ,IMPOSSIBLE CONDITION
*CONDITIONAL SENTENCE:PAST
PERFECT(HAD+3RD VB/VB+ED)
IF I HAD EATEN THE CAKE
•MAIN CLAUSE: WOULD HAVE +3RD VB/VB+ED
•I WOULD HAVE FELT SICK LAST FRIDAY.
 Using the third conditional
 The third conditional is used
to talk about things which are
impossible and did not take
place the way we wanted in
the past(REGRET);
 Romanian:conditional perfect:
as fi mers
IF HE HAD LIVED IN FRANCE,
HE WOULD HAVE BEEN A LAWYER
IF HE HAD FINISHED HIS WORK,
HE WOULD HAVE GONE HOME
IF SHE HAD HAD MORE MONEY,
SHE WOULD HAVE BOUGHT A NEW BICYCLE
For the second conditional, were
replaces was
If I were a rich man,
I would stop working as a clerk.
If I were you,
I would buy the green dress.
If I were to lose my job, I wouldn't be able to pay for my dream car.
Instead of if not, we can use unless.
“ if ” + negative action = “unless” + positive action
Compare:
Your bird will fly away if you don’t close the window.
Your bird will fly away unless you close the window.
The meaning of both sentences is the same, but the action
after ‘unless’ (close) is the opposite of the action after ‘if’
(don’t close).
I have prepared another activity
for you. You just have to match
expressions from A to expressions
from B. Will you accept the
challenge?

2. If people recycle more…
3. If I believed in fairies…
