Review and Assessment
Review and Assessment
In order for teachers to know whether
students are making progress toward
meeting content and language
objectives, they must review and
assess throughout every lesson
It’s hard to know if you got there, if you
aren’t sure where your going.
Review and Assessment
SIOP Protocol Features
Comprehensive review of key vocabulary
Comprehensive review of key content
concepts
Regular feedback provided to students on
their output (e.g., language, content, work)
Assessment of student comprehension and
learning of all lesson objectives (e.g., spot
checking, group response) throughout the
lesson
Review and Assessment
The Component of Review and
Assessment serves as a critical guide
for our teaching and re-teaching,
informs decision making, leads to
supportive feedback and provides for
fair comprehensive judgments about
student performance
Review and Assessment
The process must be cyclical and recursive in order
to achieve high academic standards for all learners

Review and Assessment
When assessing student understanding, teachers can
support them by doing the following:
Validating responses with specific information,
i.e.“I like the way you went back and reread on that
tricky part” rather than “Good job!”
Repeating correct answers in order to model
appropriate English pronunciation and inflection
Extending responses by providing additional
information
Convey acceptance and patience through facial
expressions and body language
Providing opportunities for students to give
feedback to each other through a variety of interactive
activities
