FTP
What is FTP?
• File Transfer Protocol
– An Internet tool which allows you to transfer
files between two computers.
What is a Protocol?
• The Internet’s rules for communicating.
• The most common are:
– HTTP – Hyper Text Transfer Protocol
• How web sites are displayed
– SMTP – Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
• How the internet gets your email to you
– FTP – File Transfer Protocol
• the best way to transfer files via a site
What is a Site?
• A site is a collection of files, accessed by a
URL.
• URL (Uniform Resource Locator) – a way to
access a site. For example
http://www.google.com.
• Another way to access a site is by IP
Address. For example
http://64.233.167.147.
FTP vs HTTP
• Both protocols obtain data from Internet
sites.
• FTP is designed for transferring files.
• HTTP is designed for viewing sites (web
pages) and downloading small files.
• FTP is faster than HTTP.
Using FTP Within Internet Explorer
• Type ftp:// in
front of the
address (URL)
you want to
upload to.
• Login using
your User
Name and
Password.
Using Internet Explorer
• A list will appear
with files inside
the Internet
Explorer
window.
• Now you can
upload or
download files
for use.
FTP Software
• Does not use Internet Explorer.
Available utilities include:
• WRQ Reflection – NMCI Provided
• cURL – Free from Massachusetts Institute of Technology
(MIT)
• CuteFTP, SmartFTP, ROBO FTP, Fetch, and hundreds of
others
• FileZilla – Opensource, more robust – faster, and portable
FileZilla Installation
• Download FileZilla from
http://www.portableapps.com/apps/internet
/filezilla_portable by clicking on the red
Download button.
• Save the file to a place you can easily find.
• Find and double click the file when it is
finished downloading.

• Double click the FileZillaPortable.exe

Click on the New Site
button.
Name the New site.
Type the URL or IP
Address in the host box.
Most FTP sites have user
names and passwords to
get in, so click Normal
under Logontype.

1. Enter a User name and a
Password.
2. Click on the Advanced
button.
3. Click the Use active mode
radio button.
4. Click the OK button.
5. Then click the Connect
button.

Uploading Files
• Once connected, find the file(s) to be transferred to the site using the
Local Treeview and the Local List View.
• Locate the place to upload to in the Remote List View.
–Double clicking on folders will open them.
• Drag the file(s) to the Remote List View (files on the right) and drop them
into the window.

Downloading Files
• Drag and drop files from the Remote List View to the Local Treeview
or the Local List View (windows on the left) to download.
• Use the Local Treeview to download the file into a non selected
folder.
• Use the Local List View to download the file to a selected folder.
