TYRE DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY PROJECT
INTRODUCTION
Tyre is a Lebanese Mediterranean millenary city
Its archaeological vestiges have Phoenician, Greek,
Roman, Byzantine, Crusader, Mameluke and Ottoman
roots
Tyre faces problems at different scales:
Developmental
crisis due to insufficient economic growth
Major issues in terms of sustainable development
constraining territorial and environmental balances

Major stakes
Socio-economic:
demographic growth, poverty, unemployment
Environmental: galloping ecological degradation
Urban: anarchic urban development, informal settlements,
precarious zones and misery belts.
Patrimonial: plunders and clandestine digs, excessive and abusive
touristic activity.
