Output of Data
Letts Chapter 5
Introduction
An output device is a peripheral which receives data in
the form of electrical pulses from the CPU. It then
converts this data into information or into further data.
Examples
PC Screen
A Printer
A turtle
Output on Screens
Display screens are being increasingly used for
computer output.
Their advantages are:
high speed change of display
display can include text, graphics and colours
no noise
no waste of paper
Their disadvantages are:
needs a separate device to produce a hard copy
Printers
Printer types include:
character printers
line printers
page printers
The main types of printer for general work are:
dot matrix
ink jet
laser
+Cheap to run and buy; -noisy, quality poor
+Quiet, quality output, cheap; - quality paper needed or
smudges
+Quiet, excellent quality; -cost high initially and for ink
etc, not as good as ink jets for reproducing artwork and
photos
Plotters
Increasingly good quality graphics can be produced on
printers but plotters are still needed for high quality
work.
Pen plotters are either drum plotters or flat-bed plotters.
At the moment high quality work for publication is done
on electrostatic plotters which are penless.
Other output methods
Other output methods include:
output to magnetic tape cartridges and disks;
computer output on microfiche or microfilm (COM)
voice synthesis
electrical signals to control devices.
