LEGAL ISSUES BULLETIN No34:11 October 2004
 If principals… believe a non departmental website contains
defamatory material relating to a school.., they should contact the
relevant site host to discuss what action can be taken to shut the site
down.
 To determine the host site:
 Determine the site address-www.xyz.org
 Go to the “Whois server” address at
http://www.fr1.cyberabuse.org/whois/?page=whois_server
 Enter the details of the offending site to determine who owns the
site and how to contact them.
 If after following this procedure, principals or institute managers
are unable to determine the host site, assistance can be sought
from the Department's IT Directorate HelpServices at:

Technology for Learning



A new $544M four year government program, Technology for
Learning (TfL), will commence in 2005
This program replaces the Computers in Schools Program
(CISP) which has ended - no more CISP replacements
The TfL program consists of






100 000 computers with 17” flat screen monitors/4 year
warranty/installed by vendor
129 new IT support staff across NSW
More than 660 P5/6 and Central Schools to receive all allocated
computers in one rollout- includes LAN cabling where necessary
Residual cost of 75 000 current CISP computers to be paid out
An extra $156M to upgrade bandwidth for schools that
currently do not have broadband
An extra $16.7M for ICT training for teachers
Key differences: CISP vs TfL





























TECHNOLOGY FOR LEARNING






100 000 new high speed computers over four years - latest chipset
Distribution based on enrolment – approx 1 PC for every 8 students
4 vendors: IBM, ASI, Optima, Apple – over 30 000 computers in 2005

Apple iMac G5 17”
Infra-red optical mouse (wired)
Lockdowns can be optional with justification – eg. secure computer

Remote management software pre-installed
Managed Antivirus software pre-installed
Latest MS Office suite pre-installed
Computers will be unboxed and installed into user-specified locations
including bolt-down and connect to LAN
It is expected that there will only be one rollout per year per school
Small Schools (P5/P6)





More than 660 P5/6 and Central Schools will receive all
allocated computers in one rollout- includes LAN cabling
where necessary
This means no more computers for another 4 years
Advantages include full complement up front and no
disruption to technology planning for four years
Small schools without adequate local area networks will
have these provided and it is expected that server
access will also be included
Small schools will get a weighting to provide more PCs
than the standard statewide entitlement of 1 PC for
every 8 students
Former CISP Computers



Residual cost of 75 000 current CISP computers (still
under lease) to be paid out by DET at end of lease
CISP Computers from 2001 and earlier can now be
engraved
Do not engrave any computers which are still under
warranty (CISP 2002/2003 and TfL computers)
ICT support staff


129 new IT support staff across NSW by July 2006
A minimum of 11 new technical support positions will be
created in Sydney region



These positions will provide technical help for teachers and
school staff in all Sydney Region schools



6 new positions in 2005
A further 5 -7 positions in 2006
Computers, printers, networking and application support
Regional Technology Advisers will be able to work more
proactively with the assistance of these new ICT support
staff
Computer Coordinators will have a much-reduced “breakfix” role
Computer Coordinators





Existing CC and Computer Education funding will remain
unchanged in the new structure under Technology for
Learning
However, the role is expected to change with the
introduction of Regional technical support
The CC will remain the liaison between the school –
Region - DET
A greater emphasis on the integration of ICT into
teaching and learning will steadily occur as new IT
support staff are hired over 2005-06
TAs will continue to promote ICT best-practice in all
regional schools
New Opportunities




With TAs and CCs less tied up with reactive technical
support, new initiatives to benefit all schools can be
developed
In order to gain a better understanding of school ICT
infrastructure and needs, an information gathering
and recording process will commence next year
Identifying existing ICT best-practice and utilising the
skills of existing CCs and teachers will be a priority
CC Training Days are planned to continue each term
in each SEA, your feedback and ideas are most
welcome
