Tobacco Alcohol Marijuana Recently, the Tobacco Industry was forced to reveal information about how and why they target young people in their ads. It was learned that the Tobacco Industry wants to recruit what they call “replacement smokers”: 5,000 new young smokers every day to replace the 5,000 older smokers who quit or die of smoking-related illnesses each day. A Short History • 1881 Mass marketing of cigarettes began with the first cigarette making machine. • 1955 With improvement of these machines, it took only 2.75 lbs of tobacco to make 1,000 cigarettes. • 1985 Took only 1.75 lbs to do the same. • 1980’s 90% of all cigarettes are filtered. Americans puff 10 Billion Cigarettes a Week Enough to Reach the Moon and Back: 500,000 Miles The Tobacco Industry repeatedly told the public that nicotine is not an addictive drug. They called it a “flavoring agent.” However, they knew once a person started they were hooked. During WWII a pack of cigarettes could be found in the soldiers sea rations. Some tobacco companies sent boatloads of cigarettes overseas for “The Troops.” Many soldiers who never smoked, came home addicted to nicotine. Racks of cigarettes would be placed low to the ground and by exit doors making them easy for children to steal. Today, the annual advertising budget for a tobacco company is close to $2 Billion Some advertising is going on right under our noses and we don’t even realize it. It has a strong sweet order when burned. Marijuana and the Brain • Main active chemical is THC • THC binds to nerve cells of the brain which controls learning and memory and integrates the senses with emotions and motivations. • All this means there’s a major break between what a pot user senses and what he does about it. How is Marijuana Used • Is usually smoked as a cigarette or “Joint” or in a pipe or “bong” • Sometimes in a hollowed out cigar called a “Blunt” • May be mixed with foods or tea but is not as effective. Street Names • • • • • • • Pot Herb Weed Boom Chronic Bud Sinsemilla, ganja, hashish and hash Short Term Effects After only a few uses: • Problems with memory • Problems with learning • Difficult problem solving • Touch, time, and depth are distorted. Long Term Effects • Most common long term effect is amotivational syndrome • Increased tolerance • Permanent damage to thinking and reasoning ability • Increased risk of lung or oral cancer • Damage to the reproductive system and infertility in both sexes Marijuana the Gateway Drug This means it may lead people to try other drugs. People rarely use other illegal drugs unless they try marijuana first. Marijuana more Harmful than Tobacco One joint (marijuana cigarette) is equal to 5 tobacco cigarettes in cancer causing chemicals.
