SOME FACTS
• A Talk Talk survey of 500 children aged 6-15 in Feb 2013
found:
• 5% had communicated with a stranger via webcam.
• 2% have actually met a stranger they first contacted online.
• 25% have sent or been sent inappropriate material via e
mail.
• 62% said they lie to parents about what they have been
looking at online.
• 53% delete the history on their web browser so their
parents can’t see what they have been looking at.
• 11% have either bullied someone online or been bullied
online themselves.

• Paedophiles use the internet to meet young
people. Grooming.
• People lying to others online.
• Fraud, including identity theft.
• Addiction.
• Cyberbulling.
• Seeing inappropriate images and material.
• Losing control over pictures and video.
• Viruses and pop ups.

What do we do?
• Increased focus on educating students to use the internet
correctly.
• Assemblies.
• Tutorials / PSR lessons.
• Next year we will be working towards accreditation for our e
safety work – ‘the e safety mark’. All departments in the
school will be asked to integrate e safety into some schemes
of work.
• Filtering websites.
• Student policy.
• Staff trained by CEOP.
• Support students – through HoYs, mentors, specially trained
staff and tutors.
ADVICE FOR PARENTS
• Know what in your house connects to the internet and how. Know
how your children are using the internet and where.
• Talk to you child about the internet. Find out what they use it for. Talk
to them about being safe online. Show them e safety videos. Make
sure they understand what is meant by personal information and they
don’t post personal information or inappropriate pictures online.
Ensure that they have the correct privacy settings on social networking
sites.
• Set boundaries in the online world just as you would in the real world
• Ensure they understand that people may lie online. They should never
meet up with any ‘online’ friends without an adult they trust.
• Put the computer in a family room. A safekids.co.uk survey found that
22% of boys and 19% of girls had internet access in their bedroom.
• If your child uses a webcam ensure they only use this with
friends/family they know offline.
• Be aware of the amount of time your child spends on the internet. Set
time limits on their usage of the internet.
ADVICE FOR PARENTS
• Take advantage of your ISPs parental controls.
• Purchase software to block / filter websites.
• Mobile phones – Are they internet activated? Do they have
bluetooth turned off? Checking statements
• It's not a good idea for your child to open files that are from
people they don't know. If your child receives spam or junk
email and texts, remind them never to believe their contents,
reply to them or use them.
• Stay alert to any sudden changes in the mood or appearance of
your child, or to any major change in habits or to increased
secretiveness. These are often tell-tale signs that something is
not right.
• Always reassure your child that it is never too late to report
anything that makes them feel uncomfortable. Know what to do
if something goes wrong.
