What is SQ4R?
Reading method to improve
comprehension and grades.
Helps you stay organized and efficient.
SQ4R
Survey
Title,
headings, and subheading.
Captions, under pictures, charts, graphs or
maps.
Italics, chapter objectives, and definitions.
Get an overview of what lies ahead.
SQ4R
Question
Turn
the title, headings, and/or subheadings
into question.
Read questions at the end of the chapters or
after each subheading.
Ask yourself questions:
“What did my instructor say about this chapter or
subject?”
“What do I already know about this subject?”
SQ4R
Read
Main
idea in each section.
Concentrate.
Note all the underlined, italicized, bold printed
words or phrases.
Only one section at a time.
SQ4R
Recite
Key
terms and concepts.
Ask yourself what you have just read.
Summarize in your own words.
Look for answers as you read.
Take brief notes before moving on.
SQ4R
Relate
Find
ways which are personally meaningful.
Try to link new facts, terms and concepts with
information you already know.
SQ4R
Review
When
you are done reading, skim back over
chapter.
Read your notes.
Check yourself by reciting and quizzing
yourself.
Make review a key part of your study habits.
