What is SQ4R?

Reading method to improve
comprehension and grades.

Helps you stay organized and efficient.
SQ4R

Survey
 Title,
headings, and subheading.
 Captions, under pictures, charts, graphs or
maps.
 Italics, chapter objectives, and definitions.
 Get an overview of what lies ahead.
SQ4R

Question
 Turn
the title, headings, and/or subheadings
into question.
 Read questions at the end of the chapters or
after each subheading.
 Ask yourself questions:
“What did my instructor say about this chapter or
subject?”
 “What do I already know about this subject?”

SQ4R

Read
 Main
idea in each section.
 Concentrate.
 Note all the underlined, italicized, bold printed
words or phrases.
 Only one section at a time.
SQ4R

Recite
 Key
terms and concepts.
 Ask yourself what you have just read.
 Summarize in your own words.
 Look for answers as you read.
 Take brief notes before moving on.

Relate
 Find
ways which are personally meaningful.
 Try to link new facts, terms and concepts with
information you already know.
SQ4R

Review
 When
you are done reading, skim back over
chapter.
 Read your notes.
 Check yourself by reciting and quizzing
yourself.
 Make review a key part of your study habits.
