The UC Admission Offer
Goes To . . .
Students from the full range of California
high schools and regions in order to
achieve the potential of the University’s
admission policy for California’s students
What Else Can Students Do?
Apply Across the UC System
• To multiple campuses, if possible
• Find the “right fit” for themselves
• Know the range of selectivity across UC
Tips for Students
Presenting Themselves in the Application
• Carefully complete the application:
– Tell us everything they want us to know
– Major(s) of interest, if decided
– Family background
– Participation in activities
– Use transcript(s) – don’t guess about grades
– Avoid abbreviations/acronyms
All of these tips provide context and clarity
The Message for Students
• Do as well as possible in “a-g” courses
• Take the SAT and/or ACT w/writing
• Apply to multiple campuses
• Use resources available to you
• Take advantage of opportunities
UC Selection & Comprehensive Review
• Selection =
Choosing students for admission when a campus cannot
admit all applicants who meet the freshman admissions
requirements
– Individual campus selection practices vary, but
all draw from the same Comprehensive Review
factors
• Comprehensive review
– Varies by campus; criteria set by faculty committee
– Multiple types of Comprehensive Review
– Campuses don’t collaborate on admission decisions
37
UC Comprehensive Review
• This is the process that UC’s use to review
applications in context.
• 14 factors for Comprehensive review will be
used (next slide).

There is No Golden Ticket!
No single factor is the reason why a particular
student is selected or not selected for admission.
• A university that receives more applications than available
spaces must select from among the applicant pool – some
will be admitted, others will not.
• A denial of admission is not a reflection on an applicant’s
worth, but is a reflection on a lack of space to
accommodate every student who seeks admission.
40
Personal statement
• An opportunity for applicants to provide information that
supports and enhances the review process
• Adds clarity, depth, context, and meaning to a students
application.
• The personal statement is read as part of the application.
• Enables applicant to make the best possible case for
admission
• An admission decision is never based on the content of the
personal statement alone
• One statement, one UC application
41
Personal Statement Prompts
 Applicants are asked to respond to two prompts:

Describe the world you come from—for example, your family,
community or school—and tell us how your world has shaped your
dreams and aspirations.

Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or
experience that is important to you. What about this quality or
accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person
you are?
 Word count: 1,000 words total
42
PERSONAL STATEMENTS
• Enhances your application profile, completes the picture
of who you are
• Be sure to address the questions of each unique prompt!
• Take the time to write, rewrite, and edit, edit, edit!
• Get feedback from a few different people, some who
don’t know you well.
• Always double check spelling, sentence structure, and
essay organization
Additional Comments Section
• Use Additional Comments box for clarification and
expansion of important details.
• Describe anything else that you have not had the
opportunity to include elsewhere in your
application. Limit of 550 words
• The Additional Comments section is not
