Monday: Cub Pilot on the Mississippi
 Sister Amina’s lesson on Cub Pilot on the Mississippi
 Pre-reading activity: Let’s talk about you!
 Write five sentences that tell how you might react to being
bullied or unfairly criticized. Use three out of these five
vocabulary words: agitate, protest, and confront.
 Then we will do pair share once you are done and go over
vocab.
• During Reading: Make predictions and start reading story.
• Post Reading: Create story map.
Tuesday: How to…
 8A: Testing. If you miss this day, make sure to see someone in
the office for a retake.
 8B: Teach the class!
 20 minutes: In groups, come up with a 5 minute lesson & skit
involving your assigned topics.
 The skit can involve a conflict, but make sure it’s clear in the end how
the conflict can be resolved.
 You will be graded on professionalism, creativity, preparedness, visual
aid(s) and involvement of everyone in the group & staying on task.

 Use your three minutes wisely! You should have 4-5 sentences for each daily
writing.
 Anytime I write, “Journal Title,” the assignment goes in your journal and doesn’t
need to be ripped out.
 Anytime I write “Notebook Title,” the assignment goes in your Language Arts
notebook and doesn’t need to be ripped out.
 If you forget your journal/notebook, make sure to paste or rewrite the missing
daily writing or assignment into your journal or notebook after class.

 Pre-reading question for Old Ben (pg. 78): What would you
do if you came into contact with a snake? What if you
accidentally stepped on it?
 Popcorn read Old Ben (pg. 78)

1. Recall: What kind of snake does Pa say is the only good
kind?
2. Analyze Causes and Effects: Why do Pa’s feelings
change?
3. Interpret: How do you know Pa’s feelings have changed?
4. Explain how “Old Ben” illustrates the idea that friends can be
found in the most unexpected places.
 When you’re done, raise your hand. Then work on vocab

When?
When do I use a semicolon?
 Use a semicolon when you want to form a
bond between two statements that are
related.
 Ex: It was below zero on a cold winter day;
Squiggly wondered if he would freeze to death.
 Don’t use a semicolon with coordinating
conjunctions (and, or, but). Use a comma in
this case.
 Ex: It was 10 below zero on a cold winter day,
and Squiggly wondered if he would freeze to
death.
When? Continued…
When do I use a semicolon?
 Use it as a SUPER comma!
 Ex: This week's book winners are
Herbie in Milligan College, Tennessee;
Matt in Irvine, California; and Jan in
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
 Because each item in the list requires a
comma to separate the city from the
state, you have to use a semicolon to
separate the items themselves.
