Server Virtualization
Virtualization allows us to maintain one powerful piece of
hardware instead of five or more individual pieces of
hardware.

“Greener” Reduction in power
consumption and physical waste.
Reduces the number of physical servers to
purchase($$$) and maintain(work hours
and down-time).
Improves Performance through resource
allocation.
Reduces server downtime due to
hardware failures. If hardware fails, the
virtual servers running on that system can
be restarted on another host.
Benefits of Virtualization
All eggs in few baskets – mitigated by
hardware redundancy within each host as
well as multiple hosts.
Not suitable for all servers – high traffic
servers may not work well virtualized.
Ownership – with virtualization, there is
little physical representation of the
investment.
More up-front cost – to initially get hosts.
