Server Virtualization
Virtualization allows us to maintain one powerful piece of
hardware instead of five or more individual pieces of
hardware.

“Greener” Reduction in power
consumption and physical waste.
 Reduces the number of physical servers to
purchase($$$) and maintain(work hours
and down-time).
 Improves Performance through resource
allocation.
 Reduces server downtime due to
hardware failures. If hardware fails, the
virtual servers running on that system can
be restarted on another host.

Benefits of Virtualization
All eggs in few baskets – mitigated by
hardware redundancy within each host as
well as multiple hosts.
 Not suitable for all servers – high traffic
servers may not work well virtualized.
 Ownership – with virtualization, there is
little physical representation of the
investment.
 More up-front cost – to initially get hosts.
