Switzerland and EPOS

Status of the Swiss EPOS Initiative

John Clinton, Ann Hirt, Bjarne Almqvist, György Hetényi, Domenico Giardini

• Switzerland is an EPOS Partner, and, through ETH Zurich, also the coordinator for Work Package 5 – Strategy.

• Switzerland has declared 5 Research Infrastructures (RIs) for EPOS. 4 of these exist under the ETH Zurich (University), while the GPS network is maintained by swisstopo, a governmental agency.

• The Swiss EPOS RI are already mentioned in the National Roadmap for Swiss Infrastructures; CHF1million is the operational costs for the 4 RI from ETHZ.

• Discussions with Swiss National Authorities concerning the establishment and potential Swiss participation in an ERIC are on-going.

Swiss Broadband Seismic Network

Operation: Swiss Seismological Service (SED) @ ETH Zurich. Consists of permanent and mobile seismic networks Funding: public: education sector Mandate: provide timely, accurate earth quake information for society and science EPOS Effort: member WG1; help coordinate EIDA developments for waveform dissemination

Rock Physics Laboratory

Operation: D-ERDW @ ETH Zurich Funding: public, education, industry Mandate: Provide facilities for experimental rock deformation and measurement of physical properties of rocks (simulating crustal and upper mantle conditions) EPOS Effort: member of WG6, contributing data on experimental rock deformation and physical properties.

Swiss Strong Motion Network

Operation: SED @ ETH Zurich Funding: public: education, hazard sector, some private funds for upgrade Mandate: provide strong motion record to understand Swiss hazard and respond to earthquake crises EPOS Effort: member WG1; through NERA WP3, a help to coordinate development of open data access to strong motion data, development of a new European strong motion database.

Laboratory of Natural Magnetism

Operation: D-ERDW @ ETH Zurich Funding: public, education Mandate: Provide measurement facilities for magnetic properties of materials (rocks, sediments, soils, biological tissue, magnetic materials); environmental monitoring EPOS Effort: member WG6, contribute databanks for paleomagnetic and rock magnetic data

Swiss AGNES National GPS Network

Operation: swisstopo, under Civil Defence Ministry (VBS) Funding: public (VBS) Mandate: • new reference system • will provide kinematic model • AGNES is basis for the swipos Positioning Service • scientific applications in geodynamics and atmosphere research
