Welcome back to the new school year, I hope everyone has had a lovely summer break.
We are looking forward to another successful year here at St Matthew’s, staff have
been busy over the summer planning the curriculum and preparing for the year
ahead.
We are delighted to welcome Mrs Vear back, she will be teaching in class 1 and 2
covering my management time and planning and preparation time for Mrs
Harrison. Mrs Bateman and Mrs Beaty continue in their teaching assistant roles.
As always we welcome anyone who would like to help in school for anything from
listening to readers or assisting in craft sessions to helping with transport or
mounting work for display. Let us know if you want to help. Mr B Asbury will be
helping out with art in the spring and summer terms again.
We would like to say a huge, huge thank you to Susan and Craig Johnson who over
the summer have painted the canteen throughout; they have done a fantastic job and
given their time freely. It is acts of generosity like this which make our school special.
Many thanks Susan and Craig.
Also over the break the bridge in the play area has been repaired and the equipment
has been treated, we have used the profit from the BBQ and rounder’s evening £157 to
go towards some of the cost of this.
Also a special thanks to Mrs Hewetson for all the work she has done over the holidays,
school is lovely, clean and tidy providing a welcoming learning environment for our
children.
We welcome to our school seven new children Isobel Caldecott, Ewan and
Lewis
Lumsden, Tayla Bewick, Megan Williamson, Jack Scott, Freya Crozier. We already
know them extremely well through their attendance at our preschool, we wish them
success and happiness as they move into reception.
Our theme this term is Explorers and Inventors and a copy of the plan can be seen in
the entrance.
As always we have an open door policy at St Matthew’s and if anyone has any
problems or difficulties regarding your child do not hesitate to get in touch.

SWIMMING
Swimming classes begin for the whole school on Tuesday 10th September at
Arkleby swimming pool. There will be separate sessions for Class one and
Class two. Kate Wilkinson is the instructor. Children will need to bring:
Swimming trunks or swimming costume
Armbands if they use them
Large towel
A method of tying up long hair
(goggles are optional)
As the sessions are in the afternoon there is no need for children to come to
school ready dressed, they can change just before the session. We will travel
by mini bus and be back at school for normal finishing time.

the Eco-Schools scheme. In this club we will be thinking about how we can
help conserve the environment, encourage wildlife, keep our community free
from rubbish and discuss recycling amongst many other sustainability issues.
We will be busy designing, crafting, making as our activities e.g. designing
outdoor areas, vegetable plots, poster, making homes for animals, reusing
recyclable materials, organising school and village clean ups etc.
