Importance of Capacity Development
The FAO is the UN body with the mandate for leading the development of food
and agriculture statistics at international level.
For several decades, FAO has been supporting capacity development in
agricultural statistics in most developing countries and particularly in Africa
where more than 20 countries have received FAO support during the last 5
years.
CountrySTAT plays an important role in capacity development and technical
assistance provided through the FAO Statistics Division.

Importance of national experts and
institutions
•
The CountrySTAT network aims to ensure ownership and long-term
sustainability through developing the capacity of a pool of regional and
national experts, as well as competent trainers, who are able to provide
technical support on a continuous basis through regional and national
institutions.
•
Staff from National Statistical Offices and Ministries of Agriculture have the
opportunity to learn how to administer their system as well as apply
international standards in the dissemination of official statistics on
agriculture and food.

Importance of national experts and
institutions
•
Through the institutional collaboration knowledge sharing can take place
between the institutions involved in the Technical Working Group.
•
This creates a group of individuals across countries with knowledge on
using the CountrySTAT system, disseminating data using international
standards, and are active contributors to national and regional data
required for decision making.
