For several decades, FAO has been supporting capacity development in agricultural statistics in most developing countries and particularly in Africa where more than 20 countries have received FAO support during the last 5 years. CountrySTAT plays an important role in capacity development and technical assistance provided through the FAO Statistics Division. EVENT Saturday, July 18, 2015 Importance of national experts and institutions • The CountrySTAT network aims to ensure ownership and long-term sustainability through developing the capacity of a pool of regional and national experts, as well as competent trainers, who are able to provide technical support on a continuous basis through regional and national institutions. • Staff from National Statistical Offices and Ministries of Agriculture have the opportunity to learn how to administer their system as well as apply international standards in the dissemination of official statistics on agriculture and food. EVENT Saturday, July 18, 2015 Importance of national experts and institutions • Through the institutional collaboration knowledge sharing can take place between the institutions involved in the Technical Working Group. • This creates a group of individuals across countries with knowledge on using the CountrySTAT system, disseminating data using international standards, and are active contributors to national and regional data required for decision making. EVENT Saturday, July 18, 2015 Importance of Capacity Development CountrySTAT’s strong capacity development programme provides national institutions with the knowledge and tools to: Harmonize data from different sources Administer their national CountrySTAT web site Use an open-source system and tools that can be customized to country needs Empower national teams with the knowledge of how data can be exchanged between national, regional and international systems EVENT Saturday, July 18, 2015 Technical Assistance and Support The FAO Headquarters based CountrySTAT team often provides technical assistance to countries in the following areas: Support for national and regional training workshops provided to TWG members: CountrySTAT Refresher Training to learn CountrySTAT Administrative tools. CountrySTAT Content Management System to manage the pages of your national CountrySTAT website CS-Publisher to upload and publish statistical tables CountrySTAT National User Seminar which brings together data providers and users to discuss data needs at the national level for dissemination on CountrySTAT. Regional Technical Working Group Meetings bringing together all member states to address technical issues and take important decisions for an effective regional presentation of the agriculture and food security situation.
