WORK VALUES
The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE)
released its definition of career readiness in 2010. According to
ACTE, “[c]areer readiness involves three major skill areas:
• core academic skills and the ability to apply those skills to
concrete situations in order to function in the workplace and
in routine daily activities;
•employability skills (such as critical thinking and
responsibility) that are essential in any career area;
•technical, job-specific skills related to a specific career
pathway”
WHAT ARE THE CAREER READY PRACTICES?

Component of the CCTC standards which provide
framework for student development

Experiences that can be “practiced” using different
approaches in a variety of settings

Refined throughout full continuum of learning; through
their journey in school, college and workforce

Dr. David Conley proposed an operational definition
for college readiness that focuses on academic
preparation.

He suggested that college readiness is the “level of
preparation a student needs in order to enroll and
succeed—without remediation—in a credit-bearing
general education course at a postsecondary
institution that offers a baccalaureate degree or
transfer to a baccalaureate program” (Conley 2007, 5).
