when to go to guidance?

       grade 9 ‘orientation’ timetable changes planning courses during option time (January & February) signing up for night school, e-Learning, summer school post-secondary planning when struggling (academically, emotionally, etc.) when you don’t know who to ask …

challenges of grade 9

       4 different teachers balance of schoolwork and extra-curricular activities (academic eligibility) homework – yes!

organization – using agenda being responsible when they know they are going to be away EXAMS letting go … 

switching course levels

 students may change levels on the recommendation of their teacher providing there is room in the timetable for such a change  sometimes the switch might mean they need to take a transfer course (math) or complete a prerequisite course

what to do if your child is struggling?

Academically  start with their subject teacher – when is their extra help scheduled; is your child completing homework, assignments; is your child asking for help; Wednesday morning ‘Student Catch Up’, etc.

   if they have an IEP seek the support of their special education teacher (Michelle Kaske) peer tutors / adult tutors contact their guidance counsellor (IST, SST, FOS, etc.)

what to do if your child is struggling?

Emotionally  contact their guidance counsellor    family doctor the more information we have the better able we are to support your child referrals to an attendance counsellor, social worker, psychologist, speech/language pathologist, etc.

myBlueprint  each student should have (will have) a myBlueprint account that tracks the courses they take, their final marks, and what post-secondary opportunities are available to them      they will need to have an e-mail account complete course selections on-line resource for building a resume if they complete all the activities www.myblueprint.ca/tsb handout contains a few more resources we use with students
