PPR 1 (Outside Pictures)
Kurt Morton
Rule of Thirds
The sign is off to the left and to the top.
Centered Composition
In this picture the sign is
centered.
Mergers
One of the posts merges with another
post.
Lines
There are lots of lines in this picture,
both vertical and horizontal.
Framing
The sign and the
building form a frame
around the tree.
Simplicity
The
background is
very simple:
it’s just snow.
Complicated Background
It is hard to focus on just the
parking sign because the
background is very
complicated.
Uncomplicated Background
The background
has nothing in it to
distract you from
the subject.
Viewpoint
This picture is taken from an
interesting angle.
Symmetry
The two windows are
symmetrical.
Depth
The tree in the foreground gives
the picture a sense of depth.
Horizon (one third)
The ground takes
up two thirds of the
picture.
Horizon (two thirds)
The ground only
takes up one third
of the picture and
the sky and trees
fill the other two
thirds.
Choice
I thought this was a cool picture
because the pillars give the picture
depth and act as lines as well.
Questions
• Describe how your eye as a photographer has changed from the beginning of the course
until now.
• I’m better at looking for proper composition in photos now, when I couldn’t before.
• Describe how learning about the rules of composition has helped develop your
photography skills.
• The rules are very important to keep in mind when taking a picture. I now realize the
importance of not centering a subject, as well as using unusual angles.
• Of the composition rules, which has been most influential on your photography? Explain
and describe an example.
• I think the most influential has been using unusual viewpoints.
