Music and Ideas
Invitatory for the Divine Office of Matins
on Christmas Eve - Anonymous
Christ is born to us: Come, let us adore him.
Come, let us exult in the Lord, let us rejoice in
God, our salvation:
Let us fall down before his face, confessing,
and rejoicing in him
with Psalms.
Christ is born to us: Come, let us adore him.
Because God is a great Lord, and a great King
over all gods:
therefore the Lord will not reject His people:
because all the ends of the earth are in his
hand,
and he observes the heights of the mountains.
Come, let us adore him.
Because the sea is his, and he made it,
and he fashioned the dry places with his hands:
(All Kneel)
Come, let us adore, and fall down before God:
let us weep before the Lord, who made us,
because He is the Lord our God;
and we are his people, and the sheep of his
flock.
Christ is born to us: Come, let us adore him.
Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts,
as your fathers did in the
day of temptation in the desert,
when they tempted Me in their extremity,
they tested and saw my works.
Come, let us adore him.
I was close to this generation
for nearly forty years
and said: These always err in heart;
But they have not known my ways:
to whom I swore in my anger:
If they shall (ever) enter into my rest...
Christ is born to us: Come, let us adore him.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the
beginning, is now,
and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen.

La deploration de la mort for Johannes Ockeghem Desprez
Anonymous
Woo-nymphs, godesses of the springs,
Skilled singers of all nations,
Change your clear and lofty voices
Into sharp cries and lamentations.
For the harsh molestations of Atropos
Have inescapably ensnared your Ockeghem,
Music's very treasure and master,
Who henceforth no longer escapes death,
Of whom it is a great loss that earth covers him.
Dress yourselves in clothes of mourning,
Josquin, Brumel, Pierchon, Compere;
And weep great tears from your eyes,
Who have lost your good father.
[Ongoing Chorus]
Rest eternal give to them O Lord,
And let the perpetual light shine on them.
May he rest in peace.
Amen
Quick Fact: The Composer is
unknown because at this
time in history music was
said to be a gift directly from
god and therefore it didn’t
make sense to label it with
the composers name as it
was actually god’s music
afterall.

Who was John Lennon?
Could he be considered a
modern philosophe?
1980: John Lennon shot dead
Former Beatle John Lennon has been shot
dead by an unknown gunman who opened
fire outside the musician's New York
apartment. The 40-year-old was shot
several times as he entered the Dakota,
his luxury apartment building on
Manhattan's Upper West Side, opposite
Central Park, at 2300 local time.
He was rushed in a police car to St Luke's
Roosevelt Hospital Center, where he died.
His wife, Yoko Ono, who is understood to
have witnessed the attack, was with him.
Twenty years after
his death millions of
fans paid tribute to
Mr Lennon in his
home town of
Liverpool and in
New York.
His widow launched
a campaign against
gun violence in the
United States to
mark the
anniversary.
JOHN LENNON lyrics - "Imagine"
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Who was Tupac Shakur?
Like John Lennon he was also shot and
killed. While his songs often tackled
impotant issues like gun violence and
youth violence.
Tupac Amaru Shakur was an American
artist renowned for his rapping and hip hop
music, as well as his movie roles, poetry,
and his social activism. He is recognized in
the Guinness Book of World Records as the
highest-selling rap artist, with over
75,000,000 albums sold worldwide,
including over 50,000,000 in the United
States alone.[1] Most of Shakur's songs are
about growing up around violence and
hardship in ghettos, racism and problems in
society. Shakur's work is known for
advocating political, economic, social, and
racial equality as well as his raw
descriptions of violence, drug and alcohol
abuse, and conflicts with the law. Many
fans, critics, and industry insiders rank him
as the greatest rapper ever.
LAS VEGAS (CNN) -Tupac Shakur, the
rapper whose raw lyrics
seemed a blueprint of
his own violent life, died
Friday from wounds
suffered in a drive-by
shooting. He was 25.
Ghetto Gospel-Tupac
Those who wiiiiish to follow me (my ghetto
gospel)
I welcome with my haaaaaaaaaands
And the red sun sinks at last, into the hills of
gold
And peace to this young warrior, without the
sound of guns
[Verse One]
If I could recollect a-from my hood days
I sit and reminisce, thinkin of bliss on the good
days
I stop and stare at the younger, my heart goes to
'em
They tested with stress that they under
And nowadays things change
Everyone's ashamed of the youth cause the truth
look, strange
And for me it's a first
We left 'em a world that's cursed, and it - hurts
Cause any day they'll push the button
And all come in like Malcolm X or Bobby Hutton
died for nuttin
Don't it make you get teary, the world looks
dreary
When you wipe yo' eyes see it clearly
There's no need for you to FEAR me
If you take your time and HEAR me, maybe you
can learn to CHEER me
It ain't about black or white cause we human
I hope we see the light before it's ruined, my
ghetto gospel
[Chorus]
Tell me do you see that old lady, ain't it sad
Livin out of bags, plus shes glad for the little
things she, has
And over there there's a lady, crazy
Guess who's givin birth to a, baby?
I don't trip and let it fade me
From out of the fryin pan, we jump into another
form of slavery
Even now I get discouraged
Wonder if they take it all back, will I still keep the
- courage?
I refuse to be a role model
I set goals, take control, drink out my own bottles
I made mistakes, but learned from every one
And when it's said and done, I bet there's got to
be a better one
If I upset you don't stress, never forget
That God is up in this with me yet
I feel his hand on my brain
When I write rhymes I go blind and let the Lord do
his, thang
But am I less holy?
Cause I chose to laugh and front, and drink a beer
with my homies
Before we find world peace
We gotta find peace within the war in the streets,
my ghetto gospel
[Chorus]

The MTV All-stars was a large group of
famous artists formed by MTV. They released
“What's going on” A song dedicated to the
awareness of human rights and social
activism.
Music as a medium was as an important way
of spreading ideas in the past as it is today.
Someone made a request for this great
cover of Marvin Gaye's What's Goin' On

victims worldwide. Artists in the song
include: Bono, Gwen Stefani, The

recorded right before September 11, and
when it came to shooting the [first]
video, the main idea revolved around 9/11
instead of AIDS.

to bring some lovin' here today

bring some lovin' here today

Destiny's Child & Britney Spears: Oh, what's going on?
What's going on? What's going on? Yeah, what's going on?
What's going on?
Ja Rule: What's going on in a world filled with pain?
Where's the love for which we pray? What's going on when
our children can't play, homeless can't eat? There's gotta
be a better way, What's going on when we politically blind,
can't see the signs of endangered times? What's going on?
Nelly Furtado: Oh, oh, tell me, what's goin' on in the world
today? I'd rather be dead than turn my head away. We got a
first world vision too comfy to lift our hands in the air and
cry for a switch
Michael Stipe (of R.E.M.): Father, father
P. Diddy: Father, help us, come on
Michael Stipe (of R.E.M.): Everybody thinks we're wrong
Alicia Keys: Oh, but who are they to judge us? Together,
we can all be strong
P. Diddy: United we stand, divided we fall
'NSync (J.C.): You know we've got to find a way ...

yeah what's going on What's going on? Hey, what's going
on? Somebody tell me what's going on I'll tell you what's
going on
Nelly: What's going on 'cross the seas? Every minute a
child dies by this disease, In record numbers, indeed, Got
mommas crying out, please
my baby, hold on My child ain't done nothing wrong, Still I
want to holler, ask them why they don't bother, Oh no, oh
no, Make me turn to my father and ask him why they all
got a trapped soul
Nas: I can feel what was bothering Marvin, why his words
forever remain, Dealing with these modern day problems,
cause of ignorance surrounding me and my constituents.
Too many infected, Too many lives diminishing, Nobody
safe, Protestants, Jews, Blacks and Whites, Latinos and
Asians, Pray together, Less fight, We better unite, As
genocide and chemical war, And the rich and the poor,
know that God delivers a cure
Eve: It's a shame our reality is devastating, People
praying for a cure, dying while they're waiting. Ask the
Lord for the comfort and the strength to face it. All the
kids with dreams won't get the chance to chase it. Makes
me sad Think about the lives they would've had, Think
about the orphan babies got no moms and dads. How can
we sit back and not try to make it right? We gotta come
together, We gotta fight for life.
Fred Durst (of Limp Bizkit): Somebody tell me what's
going on. (What's going on?) We got human beings using
humans for a bomb. But everybody wanna live. Don't
nobody really wanna die. You feeling me, right? (right) I
can't be watching people die (Die) and watching people
cry. Let me break it down for a minute. If there's enough
room here for you and for me there's plenty of room for
some humanity.
All artists, at various times: Somebody tell me what's
going on, What's going on?
