EARTH: SOS
‘Think globally, act locally’
ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS
• LAND
• WHAT CAN YOU DO?
• WATER
• LISTEN TO THE SONG
• AIR
• TOPICS FOR
DISCUSSION
LAND:
LITTER
Causes:
• Lack of education
• People’s carelessness
Consequences:
• Streets are dirty
• Diseases are spread
Solutions:
• Get involved in recycling
schemes
• Educate children
• Clean up the litter in cities
LAND:
DEFORESTATION
Causes:
• Acid rain
• Cutting down or burning
forests
Consequences:
• Animals and plants lose
their homes
• Animals may become
extinct
• Less oxygen to breathe
Solutions:
• Plant new trees
• Recycle paper products
LAND
ENDANGERED SPECIES
Causes:
• Overhunting (for skin, food),
overfishing
• Destruction of natural habitat
Consequences:
• Animals may become extinct
• A domino effect that will
threaten other species
Solutions:
• Start breeding programmes
• Stop buying products made
of parts of animals
• Set up nature reserves
WATER
WATER POLLUTION
Causes:
• Pouring domestic and industrial
waste into rivers, lakes and seas
• Polluting water with chemicals
from factories
Consequences:
• Stomach problems – water not
safe to drink or swim in
• Sealife is threatened with
extinction
Solutions:
• Build water purifying plants
• Clean up river banks
WATER
OIL SPILL
Causes:
• Oil tankers releasing thick
oil into oceans
Consequences:
• Dead birds, whales and
other sea animals
• Polluted oceans
Solutions:
• Use alternative sources of
energy (solar power,
electric)
• Transport oil in a safer
way
AIR
AIR POLLUTION
Causes:
• Exhaust fumes and factory
emission
• Smog and factory emissions
Consequences:
• Serious health problems allergies, breathing problems
• Wildlife is damaged
Solutions:
• Put filters on factories’
chimneys
• Use cars less
AIR
ACID RAIN
Causes:
• Air pollution
• Burning coal and other fossil
fuels
Consequences:
• Wildlife is damaged
• Lakes and rivers are polluted –
fish die
• Health problems – breathing
problems, asthma, headaches,
brain damage
Solutions:
• Conserve energy
• Use alternative sources of
energy
AIR
GREENHOUSE EFFECT
Causes:
• Burning natural gas, coal
and oil
• Deforestation
• Population growth
Consequences:
• Global warming
• Sea level rise
Solutions:
• Reduce the use of fossil
fuels
• Plant new trees
WHAT CAN YOU DO
• Take action - save energy at school and
at home (turn off the lights, the radio, the
TV and the computer when you're not
using them)
• Take action - walk or cycle to school
• Take action – do not pollute your city,
forests, rivers and lakes
• Take action - write letters to local papers
• Take action - reduce / reuse / recycle all
kinds of items, from soda pop cans to
clothes to save energy and raw materials
EARTH SONG
Earth Song
By: Michael Jackson
What about sunrise
What about rain
What about all the things
That you said we were to gain.. .
What about killing fields
Is there a time
What about all the things
That you said was yours and mine...
Did you ever stop to notice
All the blood we've shed before
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores?
What have we done to the world
Look what we've done
What about all the peace
That you pledge your only son...
What about flowering fields
Is there a time
What about all the dreams
That you said was yours and mine...
Did you ever stop to notice
All the children dead from war
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores
I used to dream
I used to glance beyond the stars
Now I don't know where we are
Although I know we've drifted far
Hey, what about yesterday
What about the seas
The heavens are falling down
I can't even breathe
What about apathy
Can't we feel its wounds
What about nature's worth
It's our planet's womb
What about animals
We've turned kingdoms to dust
What about elephants
Have we lost their trust
What about crying whales
We're ravaging the seas
What about forest trails
Burnt despite our pleas
What about the holy land
Torn apart by creed
What about the common man
Can't we set him free
What about children dying
Can't you hear them cry
Where did we go wrong
Someone tell me why
What about babies
What about the days
What about all their joy
What about the man
What about the crying man
What about Abraham
What about death again
TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION
 What can we do to make our cities more environmentally-friendly?
 Explain why so much attention is paid to ecological problems
nowadays and why people are getting alarmed and demand urgent
actions to protect nature.
 We often hear the words “harmful effects of civilization on nature”.
What do they mean? Illustrate the results of harmful and helpful
influences of human contacts with nature.
 How do scientists, journalists, teachers, public and political leaders
draw peoples” attention to the problems of environmental protection?
 Explain how and why our attitude towards nature is changing
together with the knowledge we are getting.
 Speak about the practical steps which are being undertaken
environment.
 Man's survival depends upon the way he treats his environment. Say
in what way this is true.
 It is our responsibility to preserve this planet for future generations.
Say what must be done to achieve this.
THE END
Thank you for your
attention 
Now go and act to save
the earth before it’s too
late!
