Soft start - why we do we do it and what are the benefits?

•Children feel at ease when transitioning from nursery to P1.

•Children have a chance to apply their new knowledge and skills in a free environment.

•Children feel relaxed, calm and ready to start to the day.

•Children have a chance to play socially with their peers.

•Children have to make their own choices and decisions.

Literacy

•We learn the sounds in Jolly Phonics using actions, songs and characters to help us.

•We practice writing the letters and saying their sound using multi sensory approaches.

•We use the letters we have learned to build words and blend the sounds together.

•We learn tricky words that cannot be ‘sounded out’.

Active Literacy

We work in groups and move round stations

Writing letters in shaving foam Writing our new sound and drawing pictures that start with that sound Writing letters in the sand Tracing and writing the sound on laminates and white boards.

Writing rainbow letters with coloured pens Making letters with playdough Playing matching and bingo games.
