What do we do in P1?

Soft start - why we do we do it and what are the benefits?

•Children feel at ease when transitioning from nursery to P1.

•Children have a chance to apply their new knowledge and skills in a free environment.

•Children feel relaxed, calm and ready to start to the day.

•Children have a chance to play socially with their peers.

•Children have to make their own choices and decisions.

Literacy

•We learn the sounds in Jolly Phonics using actions, songs and characters to help us.

•We practice writing the letters and saying their sound using multi sensory approaches.

•We use the letters we have learned to build words and blend the sounds together.

•We learn tricky words that cannot be ‘sounded out’.

Active Literacy

We work in groups and move round stations

Literacy - Reading

•Big books and daily stories – look at purposes and features of print.

•Introduce reading books when we know all the sounds of the alphabet and have learned some ‘tricky words’.

•Introduce ORT characters and stage 1 picture books.

•Progress with reading books at own pace.

Literacy

At home

•Make words with sound cards.

•Practise recognising and spelling tricky words.

•Look for words around you – environmental print.

•Play games which require talking and turn taking. • Read books, magazines, stories - read to children showing the direction and features of print.

- Look for the tricky words - sound out some words - look for sentences with capital letters and full stops.

Numeracy

•We have been learning about...

- sorting and matching - shapes and patterns - number formation and counting to 10 •We use active approaches just like in literacy.

•Next, we will be learning about addition.

*Topics are flexible and may change depending on the interests of the class or any global events that are affecting our lives.

Topics are taught in an interdisciplinary way incorporating any appropriate subjects – eg writing and art may be topic based.

•Sound sheets and using word cards for building & blending words and playing games (see leaflet) •Tricky word practice – spelling & recognition •Reading •Maths once a week (once we have introduced all the sounds) •Topic related homework – occasionally
