An Introduction to
Year Three
Literacy




Writing will cover a wide range of genre,
including fiction & non fiction
Children need their reading book & reading
record in school every day and Library book
on Wednesday.
Reading books can be changed on Monday,
Wednesday and Friday.
Handwriting is done every week
Maths





10 minute starter
Whole class main activity
Individual or group work
Plenary
Tables: x2,x3,x4,x5,x6,10 should be known by
the end of the year. Tests will be given on a
weekly basis on a specified set of tables. A
list of good Tables games websites will be put
on homework labels.
Science


This half term we are finding out about
characteristics of materials
We will be learning about properties of
magnets and springs after half term
ICT




Children are being introduced to Databases
this term.
They will be using music composition software
after half term
Throughout the year they will be accessing
the KGFL (digital brain) site:
http://upperthong.kgfl.digitalbrain.com
Hopefully they will be Blogging using our
website and be in contact with other schools
around the world.
ICT





ICT is used across the curriculum
In Maths the children use ICT maths games to
reinforce work in the classroom
Children use the Internet to research topics
Microsoft Publisher is used for word
processing and desk top publishing
A range of other software is also used
Geography



This term’s topic is Weather around the World.
Through holiday destinations we will research
other places around the world and find out
about their weather.
Also we will look at extremes of weather and
how a forecast is put together.
History
Main topics for the year are:
1.
Ancient Egyptians (Spring term)
2.
Who Do You think You Are? (Summer term)
Art & Design



This term we are focusing on Pattern
Children will need an old shirt so as to protect
their school clothing
We will also be looking at sculpture and
visiting the YSP
Music



This year all the class (including the
teachers!!!) are being taught Samba Drumming
There will also be musical composition using
ICT in the second half of this term.
There will be opportunities for the children to
perform at various places including the
Holmfirth Festival.
PE




Children need an indoor and outdoor PE kit in
school at all times
Trainers / pumps, shorts, t-shirt, jogging
bottoms and sweatshirt. Please look at the
suggested colours of PE shorts and T-Shirts
This term we will be doing gymnastics or
dance each week on a Friday
Outdoor games takes place on Wednesday
each week – this term will be football and
rugby
Homework




Times tables will be tested regularly
In addition, other homework may be given to support work
being done in different curriculum areas which will be done in
a “Learning Logs”e.g. – finding patterns for Art
Some Maths. Homework will be given to revise concepts
already taught. If you need to refer to the school Calculation
Policy which can be accessed on the Website under “Parents”
