Thematic Planning • Colonial America unit 2005-06 • Summer planning session – What were the skills we wanted to teach? – How could we incorporate technology? – How could students present the information using technology? Technology Skills Fifth Grade Introduce the concepts and usability of spreadsheets through MS Excel. Develop several independent multimedia projects using the Microsoft Suite to convey ideas to the class. Introduce the Mavis Beacon Typing program to advance the keyboard skills. Introduce the concepts of web design, the TV studio, digital video, electronic art and image creation. Use Accelerated Reader for reading comprehension. Use Math Facts in a Flash as a mathematics-learning tool. Gather information using electronic card catalog. (OPAC) Use the appropriate search engines effectively to locate information. Informational Slides (6 slides) The slideshow contains 6 slides, one on each topic with a minimum of three details for each topic. And our teacher…Mr.Cohen. Clothing • The men wear loin cloth. • The women wear ponchos with a long brown skirt. • Woman have braids in their hair. • Their clothing usually white or brown. Food • The Hopi eat corn, squash, beans, maize, and grain. • The Hopi hunted mammoths until they became extinct. • The Hopi hunted wild turkey. • The Hopi hunted buffalo. Homes • Hopi’s lived in pueblos. • There were no beds or chairs in the houses. • Smoke left the house from a hole in the roof from fire. Climate/Environment • Hopi’s live in NE Arizona. • It was very warm and dry and there were many sand dunes. • They had strict rules about water. Customs/Legends • The Hopi believed they came from the underworld and would go back when they died. • They believed they used a blue bird to get out from the underworld. • The Hopi believed Kachina dolls caused rain. You may tour our site with your child as the guide. Each area has replicas of the items used in the Native American’s everyday life. Mr. Cohen and Mrs. Benavidez taught this Social Studies unit in collaboration. Students were instructed on skills that included research with print and online resources. They were also instructed on technology skills using web quests and power point. Students learned how to use speaking strategies effectively by presenting the information they learned to classmates and other students. Many Language Arts and Social Studies standards were addressed with this unit of study. Thank you to all the students and parents that helped make this a fun and exciting learning experience.
