Athletic Training Room Rules
• All new injuries need to be checked by one of the
athletic trainers before a doctor’s visit.
• Morning treatments are before school
• All doctor’s notes when missing workout need to
be turned in to one of the athletic trainers. No
self diagnosis or notes from home. Athletic
injuries go through trainers not the nurse.
• All paperwork MUST be turned in before an
athlete can participate in an athletic event –
including practice.
Physicals
• Physicals are required each year prior to
participation in athletics
• Please complete after May
• Must be a UIL physical form
• No self diagnosis or notes from home.

Voluntary Cardiac Screening
• These will be provided at the same time as
physicals. This is not yet required. It is an
extra fee of $25 per athlete
Emergency Procedure
• Each DSISD athlete needs an accurate
emergency/Travel card.
• Please contact us if personal information
needs to be changed on emergency card.
• In an emergency- Call 911 first, then parent.
• Minor injuries- Parent will be notified.
• Safety of student will be TOP priority.
Athletic Insurance
• DSISD provides an accidental insurance policy- it is a
Supplemental/SECONDARY insurance form and only
covers a limited amount of charges.
• DSISD also offers a catastrophic insurance policy for
bills exceeding $25,000
• Medical Bills for injuries should not be billed to DSISD
• The parent/guardian is ultimately responsible for
payment of all medical bills not covered by accidental
insurance.
• Injury form is validated by one of the Athletic Trainersonly valid for 90 days after injury.

• Visits DSHS upon request to examine injured
athletes.
Concussion Policy
• 1. All athletes who sustain head injuries are required to be evaluated by
their primary care physician. They must have a normal physical and
neurological exam prior to being permitted to progress to activity. This
includes athletes who were initially referred to an emergency department.
• 2. The student will be monitored daily at school by the athletic trainer
and/or school nurse. His/her teachers will be notified of their injury and
what to expect. Accommodations may need to be given according to
physician recommendations and observations.
• 3. The student must be asymptomatic at rest and exertion.
• 4. Once cleared to begin activity, the student will start a progressive stepby-step procedure outlined in the DSISD protocol.
• 5. Upon completion of the return to play protocol, the physician of record
must provide a written statement that in the physician’s professional
judgment it is safe for the athlete to return to play.
• 6. Once the student has completed steps 1 through 5, he/she may return
to their sport activity with no restrictions.
Weather Policies
Lightning Policy
Weather Sentry sends text messages to coaches
cell phones.
Advisory area- Lightning is detected 30 miles away
Warning area- Lightning is detected within 10 miles
of DSHS- All athletes are cleared from field
Must wait until all clear signal or 30 minutes after
last lightning strike in warning area.
This is monitored by the athletic trainer.

DSISD Athletic Policies
• Athletics is a privilege, it carries
responsibilities
– Sportsmanship – athletes will refrain from the use
of profanity or resorting to illegal tactics
– Disrespect to teacher or coach- Will not be
tolerated- punishment will be handled on an
individual basis. Punishment may call for expulsion
from athletic activities for one calendar year from
date of incident
DSISD Athletic Policies
• Personal Appearance and Grooming
– Dress – athletes will workout in school issued clothing.
Each sports will determine travel uniforms in
accordance with the schools dress code.
– Hair- should be clean, well groomed, and out of the
eyes and should not be distracting. Bleaching and
dying of hair to an un-natural color is unacceptable.
– Facial hair is not allowed.
– Body art/ piercing – tattoos are not to be visible
during practices/games. Piercings should be taken out
for practices/games.

– Quitting – if an athlete quits a sport, he/she will be
given 24 hours to reconsider. If quitting a team,
athlete will not be able to compete in another sport
until the season of the first sport is complete.

Lettering Policies
• To earn an athletic letter in DSISD in a particular sport you
must:
• Complete an entire season as a member in good standing
with the team
AND
• Participate in at least 50% of the contest scheduled
OR
• Earn a point at the varsity district tournament, meet or
match
OR
• Deemed to be of outstanding value to the team
Expectations for Parents
• Support coaches… don’t tear down what we build – we are not going to
fight you at the dinner table
• Help us make your kid tough…. Tough game for tough kids!
• Don’t allow them to quit just because circumstances are tough
• Pain vs. Injury
• Support your child, their team and the Tigers
• Be at the competitions and cheer for our kids!!!
Volunteer Needs
• Be a member of the Team booster club
• Work the concession stand and at tournaments that DSHS hosts
Chain of Command
• Discuss any concern or problem with the appropriate
coach. Concerns or problems will be addressed in
the following order:
1. Athlete/ team coach
2. Athlete/ parent or guardian/ team coach
3. Athlete/ parent or guardian/ team
coach/ head coach
4. Parent or guardian/ Athletic

Total Student Athlete
• We encourage our student-athletes to
participate in a variety of sports throughout
the year. Any kind of competition is good for
athletes and this cross sports participation will
only strengthen our overall athletic programs.
• We also encourage our athletes to attend as
many other school functions, both academic
and athletic, as possible.
