The first “athletic trainers” were actually
physicians working with gladiators

Roman Empire fell and interest in
athletics declined
Athletic Training did not emerge again
until the early 20th century
Many early athletic trainers were team
managers who taped ankles
Most were self taught and are
responsible for a lot of techniques
Athletic Training Today

Athletic trainers are not the “jack of all
trades” people who founded the
profession
Highly trained professionals
Wide variety of skills
Athletic Training Today

NATA-BOC Certified Athletic Trainer has
a vital role in various settings







Colleges and Universities
World class amateur athletics
Professional athletics
Clinics
Industry
What is Sports Medicine?



The term means different things to
different groups
Encompasses many specialized areas
Athletic Training is just one of those
Activity

