INTRODUCTION TO SLC
Student Loans Company Ltd (SLC)
SLC is a non profit making Government owned organisation set up 1989
to provide loans and grant to students in colleges and Universities in the
UK
• Works with Local Authorities in Wales, the Student Awards Agency
for Scotland, the Education and Library Boards in Northern Ireland,
Higher Education Institutions and HM Revenue and Customs, to
provide student support in the UK.
• 1.3 million student customers
2.8 million customers no longer in Higher Education
SLC - Paying and Collecting
The Student Loans Company:
• Pay loans and grants to students
• Pay tuition fees to colleges and universities
• Work with HM Revenue and Customs to collect loan repayments
• Collect repayments on ‘mortgage style’ loans issued before 1998
• Make maintenance payments to school pupils aged over 16 in
Northern Ireland and Wales
• Pay bursaries and scholarships on behalf of universities and colleges
• Run the administration and processing associated with these

• Manage, develop and maintain business products, services and
relationships with HE providers, sector organisations, and stakeholders
• Undertake project work and annual roll-out for each AY
• Provide business and service information & best practice

• Manage the day to day running of business to business systems
• Two teams:
– Funding Team
– HE Portal Services
• The department work with institutions regarding operational queries
and issues via email or the HEI Helpline on 0845 702 3316

Student Applications – 3rd Party Consent to Share
• Institutions are able to speak to SFE about specific student cases only
if 3rd party consent to share has been given to the HEI by the student
– Student creates ‘consent password’ via call to SFE. Password
given to institution by student
– HEI advisor calls Practitioner Helpline 0845 602 0583 option 1, with
consent password and student identification reference
