Henry I of England
Reigned: 1100 – 1135
House: Norman dynasty
• Son of William the Conqueror;
• Famous of his knowledge of Latin;
• Known as the Lion of Justice for his reform
of administration;
• Was the first known English king to pass
the throne to a female heir – Queen Matilda.
Henry II of England
Reigned: 1154– 1189
House: Plantagenet
• The first Plantagenet king;
• Known for his charity work: he would
give one-tenth of his food supply
to the poor;
• Expert in Latin and Law;
Henry III of England
Reigned: 1216– 1272
House: Plantagenet
• Underwent two coronations: in 1216 and later,
in 1220;
• Was in a permanent clash with his barons,
headed by Simon de Montfort, who wanted
to restrict royal power;
• Had Westminster Abbey re-built in
Gothic style, thus it its present appearance.
Henry IV of England
Reigned: 1399 – 1413
House: Lancaster
• Son of John Gaunt who had been the patron
of Geoffrey Chaucer;
• Seized the throne after having deposed his
cousin, Richard II, who had earlier expelled
him from England;
• Was the first post-Norman king to deliver
his coronation speech in English.
Henry V of England
Reigned: 1413 – 1422
House: Lancaster
• Believed to have had a riotous youth;
• Extremely successful in the Hundred
Years War;
• Won the Battle of Agincot;
• Henry’s actual buddy was John Oldcastle
Who eventually be executed by the King
for political reasons.
Henry VI of England
Reigned: 1431 – 1453
House: Lancaster
• The initiator of the War of the Roses
between the Houses of Lancaster and York;
• Unpopular with the English for his increasing
Losses in the Hundred Years War and poor
Domestic administration;
• Suffered from insanity;
• Deposed by his cousin Edward of York;
• Imprisoned and probably murdered by
Edward of York.
Henry VII of England
Reigned: 1485 – 1509
House: Tudor
• The first Tudor king of England;
• Put an end to the Wars of the Roses
by defeating Richard III and killing him at the
Battle of Bosworth Field;
• Introduced the double rose as the emblem
of the new dynasty, having thus combined the
Red Rose of Lancaster and the White Rose of
York.
Henry VIII of England
Reigned: 1509 – 1547
House: Tudor
• The last bearer of this name among the
English kings;
• Created the Church of England and
became head of his own church;
• Was a well-educated person, jovial and
fond of sports, yet of tyrannical nature:
among the people whom he had
beheaded were 2 of his 6 wives and Sir
Thomas More, the author of “Utopia”.
