(the answer to these questions are in the text don't right the notes only right the
questions and answers.)
The Louisiana Purchase.(notes)
● 1803 france takes back louisiana from spain, spain got louisiana from france after
french & indian war.
Jefferson sends emissaries to france to make an offer for new orleans.(between 2-10
million dollars). The French don't treat our emissaries with the courtesy, so they sit there
for awhile.one day there brought in and offered another deal. The french said that the
whole louisiana territory is worthless, and that when they sell new orleans all there left
with is worthless land. but what if they could get rid of this land and the americans are
willing to pay.So the immisarries are offerd all of louisiana for 15 million dollers,3
cents an acer. They were so exited they didnt tell jefferson about the deal. They said
we’ll take it! It was a no brainer. It was commen sense. This was nearly 2x the size of the
U.S.the treaties agree.they go back to the U.S for Jefferson this is a dream. However
there is a problem, that problem is the constitution.
The Louisiana Purchase.(notes)
Jefferson is a strict constitutionelist and he’s not a fan of the alestic cause.which
allowes the goverment to stretch things a little to get the necessary things done.so
jefferson looks through the constitution and finds from artical II section 2 [“the
president] shall have the power,by and with the advice and consent of the senate,to
make treaties, provided concor…”The treaty. The president can make treaties, and if
there buying land from france that’s making a treaty. Jefferson bought the louisiana
territory on july 4th of 1803.
The Lewis and Clark Expedition.
Who were they?
● Captain Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809) was President Thomas Jefferson’s private
secretary. He was put in charge of the journey and in charge of exploring the newly
purchased louisiana territory.
● Lieutenant William Clark (1770-1838) served in the U.S army. He was responsible
for hiring and training the men for the exposition, while Lewis gathered supplies
for the trip. He included rifles, food, warm clothing. They also brought glass beads
and trinkets to trade with the indians.
● They were asked by Jefferson to explore the wild west of North America.
The Lewis and Clark Expedition.
● Lewis and Clark and their team of forty men began their journey at the city of St.
Louis on May 14,1804.
● They started traveling up the Missouri River. They had one large boat called a
barge and two smaller boats called pirogues.
● Lewis and Clark met many native american tribes. There were some tense moments
but they made some friends and traded with many different tribes along the way.
● When they went to spend the winter with the Mandan Nation they met a trapper
named Charbonneau and his wife named Sacagawea.
● Sacagawea then joined them in their journey.
On the trail with Sacagawea
The Lewis and Clark Expedition
● Sacagawea showed them which plants they could eat and the ones they cannot. She
also kept peace and trade with different tribes.
● Without help from Sacagawea and some tribes they would have surely failed.
● During their journey they ran into the great falls. It took them about one month to
carry their boats all the way around the falls.
● Next they hit the Rocky Mountains, they realized it was much more difficult to
cross then they expected. On the other side they met the Nez Perce People who
helped them with food and shelter.
● It was around a year and a half (November in 1805) after leaving St. Louis that
they reached the pacific ocean and stayed for the winter near it.
● They started back home in March of 1806. It took them 6 months to return home.
