Speed - Determination - Freedom What is Disabled Sailing? “Sanctioned by US SAILING - the clinic and regatta is the only one of its kind and purely dedicated to the Paralympic vision.” The C. Thomas Clagett, Jr. Memorial Clinic and Regatta trains sailors with disabilities to enhance their skills during an intensive three to four-day sail training and racing event. The Clagett Program is now in the third year of the Olympic quadrennium with a goal to improve the skills of those sailors with Paralympic aspirations. 2 NEWPORT, RI NEWPORT, RI - City-by-the-Sea The back drop for the Clagett sailing event is the picturesque seaside village of Newport. Newport has long been referred to as the “sailing capitol of the world.” No other area has hosted more America’s Cup campaigns and yachting events than Newport. The City-by-the Sea has been the home and sailing waters of the America’s Cup and thousands of local, national and world-class sailing regattas. SAIL NEWPORT - Sailing Center Site Regatta activities are centered at The Sail Newport Sailing Center in Fort Adams State Park. Sail Newport is the Clagett event headquarters for the clinic, racing and social events. 3 Who Participates? COMPETITORS A group of sailors, who happen to have physical disabilities, gather each year to participate in the Clagett Clinic and regatta and pursue their dream. Thomas Clagett Jr. Memorial Clinic and Regatta honors the late Tom Clagett (1916 - 2001), a U.S. Navy World War II veteran who learned to sail on the Chesapeake Bay. As a youngster he suffered temporary paralysis as the result of a bout of meningitis; it was an experience that left him with a deep respect for the accomplishments of people with disabilities, especially athletes. Tom’s daughter (Judy) and granddaughter (Stephanie), pictured below, have organized the event each year since 2003. MISSION The Clagett Memorial Clinic and Regatta was created to address the void in advanced training opportunities for competitive U.S. sailors with disabilities, and to assist them in achieving their individual goals on the international racing circuit and at the Paralympic level.
