•Contacted 5 school boards to thank them for participating last year and to let them know we would like to promote Sparks through their KinderStart program again this year •Contacted each school to obtain the numbers of girls in KinderStart Program and to confirm Principal’s name •160 schools including 5 French speaking schools participated •Included in envelope: Welcome to Sparks letter, colouring page, bookmark •3300 pink envelopes were prepared for schools throughout the province •Included in envelope to Principal: letter to Principal, 3 – 6 guiding thank you bookmarks •2693 girls registered in KinderStart in Schools

We prepared letters for girls in the Kinder Start Program in each school in the Province introducing the Sparks branch of Guiding to the girl and her parents. We have had a very positive response to this project and we are now preparing our letters to go to the schools for this school year. Over the next week or two, we will be in contact with each school to ensure that the Principal and Kindergarten Teacher are able to assist us once again. Welcome to Sparks!
Dear Parent or Legal Guardian: When your daughter starts school in September she will be of age to become a part of a group of 5 and 6 year olds, known as “Sparks”, the youngest branch of Girl Guides of Canada – Guides du Canada. The Sparks program exposes girls to a wide variety of activities and allows them to begin to explore the world around them in the company of other girls their age. In Sparks, the emphasis is on developing friendship and learning about community, while also exploring the individual skills and talents of each girl in the unit. Through a varied program that includes activities in the areas of the outdoors, the arts and the sciences, girls are encouraged to try a bit of everything. No two days in Sparks are alike. Examples of activities at weekly Sparks meetings could include: Becoming familiar with the community through excursions to community facilities such as a fire station or a neighbourhood landmark Exploring the arts by sculpting animals with playdough or making musical instruments Learning about the outdoors on nature scavenger hunts Having sleepovers or going camping Sparks learn to share and to think of themselves as part of a greater community and, along the way, they make friendships that will last a lifetime. Spark units usually meet once a week for one hour but this can vary. Like the other branches of Guiding, Sparks earn special badges to be worn and proudly displayed on their uniform. Le programme des Sparks expose les jeunes filles à une grande variété d'activités et leur permet de commencer à explorer le monde autour d’elles en compagnie d'autres filles de leur âge. Dans les Sparks, l'emphase est sur le développement d'amitiés et la connaissance de sa communauté, tout en explorant les différentes qualités et talents de chaque fille dans l'unité. A travers un programme divers qui inclut des activités dans les secteurs du plein-air, des arts et des sciences, les filles sont encouragées à essayer un peu de tout. Chaque journée dans les Sparks est differentes. Par exemple, les activités lors des réunions hebdomadaires de Sparks peuvent inclure: Faire des excursions dans les organisations communautaires telles qu'une station de pompier ou un site historique local Explorer les arts en construisant des instruments musicaux ou en sculptant des animaux en papier mâché Se renseigner sur l’environnement en faisant du recyclage ou en allant faire du camping Les Sparks apprennent à partager et à penser d’elle-même en tant que membre d'une plus grande communauté et, en même temps, elles se font des amies pour la vie. Les unités de Sparks se réunissent habituellement une fois par semaine pour une heure mais ceci peut varier. Comme les autres branches des Guides, les Sparks gagnent des insignes spécialles à être portée fièrement sur leurs uniformes. We have already contacted your school confirming your participation in the Kinder Start Project for this year, which involves sending a letter home with all girls in the Kinder Start Program in each of the schools in Newfoundland and Labrador. This letter introduces the Sparks branch of Guiding to the girl and her parents or guardians. Here in Newfoundland and Labrador, over the years, we have worked alongside the teachers and staff of many schools as female role models and mentors of girls. With your cooperation, we would like to continue our more pro-active approach. We believe that we can deliver our programs to more girls by letting them know how much we have to offer. Enclosed is an envelope for each girl in Kinder Start containing a letter to the girl’s parent or guardian (copy attached), along with a colouring page and a bookmark. Please send these envelopes home with the girls as they come through the Kinder Start Program in your school. Membership Growth Coordinator, Newfoundland and Labrador Council
The Newfoundland and Labrador Council is seeking an energetic and inspired individual to bring Guiding to more girls and women in Newfoundland and Labrador communities. Our new Membership Growth Coordinator will be a self-starter and team player, who will bring innovation and commitment to this work. • • • • • • • •
Responsibilities:
Research and understand the opportunities for GGC growth in Newfoundland and Labrador Develop and implement a plan, best suited to local communities, to welcome new girls and women into GGC membership Utilize current national resources and events to recruit new members Foster strategic relationships with community leaders and potential partners which will lead to membership growth opportunities Identify and pursue financial and other resources, within communities and with sponsors, to support membership growth Work with other GGC staff and current Members to complete membership registration processes Contribute to and support overall services of the Girl Guide of Canada-Guides du Canada NL Council
