Universitat Jaume I
• The
Universitat Jaume I in Castelló (UJI) is a public higher
education and research centre, founded in 1991.
• It
currently offers 31 undergraduate degrees, 40 official
postgraduate master’s degrees, 9 UJI-specific master’s degrees
and 26 specialisation courses.
• The UJI has more than 1290 lecturers and approximately 14,000
students.
• 2,000
projects and contracts for research, innovation and
development. More than 300 cooperation agreements with foreign
universities and higher education centres.

Castelló-Valencia: 55 minutes
Castelló-Barcelona: 2:15h
Castelló-Madrid: 3h
Castelló: town and surroundings
• Castelló de la Plana
Castelló is the capital of the province of the same name, a quiet,
accessible Mediterranean city of nearly 200,000 inhabitants in
which you can move from one end to another in minutes.
Castelló: town and surroundings
Castelló is situated 65 km north of
Valencia and 285 km south of
Barcelona.
It is a pleasant, sunlit town lying
between the Desert de les Palmes hills
and the Mediterranean Sea with a
pleasant temperature of around 27 ºC
in the summer and 18 ºC in the winter.
Castelló: town and surroundings
• Surroundings
The province of Castelló is a blend of seaside
and mountain landscapes. Along the coast,
the landscape combines large areas of
orange groves with 120 km of excellent
beaches.
Inland, the scenery changes dramatically. The
province of Castelló is the second most
mountainous in Spain and its inland areas
have a rich cultural, historical and landscape
heritage.
Castelló: town and surroundings
• Connections
The city of Castelló is well
connected by road and rail to
other important towns and
cities around Spain and
Europe.
The nearest airport is Manises, in
Valencia (60km).
There are several trains between
Castelló and the big cities like: Valencia
(55min), Alicante (2,35hrs), Barcelona
(2,15hrs) or Madrid (3hrs) with various
departures every day.
THE CAMPUS
The campus
• The campus in the city
The campus is located very near the city centre and is less than 5
minutes from the bus station and the train station for local and
long distance connections.
The city’s structure and size allow easy movement from one
place to another on foot, by bicycle, by bus network or by TRAM
(ecological city transport).
• The UJI, a single-campus University
The campus
The UJI offers all its
state-regulated
courses on a modern
campus, designed as
a single unit,
bringing together the
most up-to-date
academic, research,
cultural and social
facilities.
The campus
The campus, covering 176,000 m2 has 4 faculties and many
research and management buildings designed around a central
13,000 m2 garden area.
It is a green, sustainable campus that promotes the use of
renewable energies, with recycling points for the recovery of waste
materials.
Throughout the campus, access has been incorporated for people
with disabilities, with no architectural barriers to hinder their
movement.
The campus
• Official languages
The UJI’s mother tongue is Catalan, but both Catalan and Spanish are
used in academic teaching, and students are free to choose which
language they want to express themselves in. Overall, around 21% of
undergraduate classes, 13% of master’s classes and 9% of PhD
programme classes are in Catalan. Lectures in the master’s courses are
usually in Spanish because many of our students are from overseas.
Teaching in English
Three high performance student
groups, called ARA, are taught in
English in the degrees of
Business,
Engineering
in
Industrial
Technologies
and
Psychology.
Five master’s degrees are taught
entirely in English.
The campus
• Accommodation
Campus University Hall of Residence
250 single rooms on the University campus
Student flats and apartments
In Spain, students very often share a flat.
INFOCAMPUS at the University offers information about flats or rooms to let and
flat-sharing through the Accommodation Directory.
Accommodation with families (Family Programme)
A convenient option designed for foreign students, which usually includes
accommodation and meals, but also tends to be slightly more expensive.
Solidarity Programmes
-”Pisos solidaris” programme. Rent free in exchange for a few hours a week of
voluntary social work.
-”Viure i conviure” programme. Students share elderly citizens’ homes

Outstanding services
Library
Located in one building, the library has a
range of spaces and equipment adapted
to different modes of study and research.
Students enrolled in the UJI have access
to almost 300,000 volumes in the library,
open 24 hours a day during exam
periods and including:
• The Media centre, with DVD films, music CDs and
open source software for loan.
•A free laptop and digital camera loan service
•Study rooms for group work
•Computer rooms, with 150 computers with free
Internet access
•The Self-Access Language Centre (CAL)
•Interlibrary loan
•European Documentation Centre ...
The campus
• Self- Access Language Centre (CAL)
The CAL offers an excellent opportunity for students to develop their own skills
in the study of languages.
It is equipped with facilities and materials (such as computers, audiovisual and
bibliographical resources) classified by topic and level, and structured in such a
way that students can learn independently or with the help of a language
advisor.
The CAL organises courses in Catalan
and Spanish for foreigners, and in
German, English, French, Italian and
Romanian for the entire community.
Conversation groups and pairs are also
organised so students can practice and
improve their oral skills. A group of
qualified advisors is available to guide
students in the process.
• Sports Centre
The Universitat Jaume I has an area of over 95,000
m2 of sports facilities: outdoor spaces, indoor pool,
sports pavilion and a rackets area (tennis, paddle).
The sports service offers over 80 different sports,
75% of them on the campus at a highly reduced
price for students.
The centre also organises university championships
and makes its facilities and sports equipment
available to all the university community.
The campus
The campus
• New technologies
The UJI is a pioneer in the use of new
technologies:
100%
multimedia
classrooms, a ratio of 1 computer for
every 2 students, free wi-fi access on
campus, numerous computer labs, loan of
laptops and video cameras, etc.
Multimedia classrooms
The classrooms on the UJI campus are
equipped with the latest technology for
teaching. Lecturers can use audiovisual
equipment and media to facilitate the
teaching-learning process.
HIGHER QUALITY IN
EDUCATION
RESEARCH AND
INNOVATION
Higher quality in education
• Higher quality in education
The UJI’s declaration on Quality Policies states that its objective is “to
be an excellent university in the fields of teaching, research and
management, in accordance with the philosophy of total quality and,
more specifically, in agreement with the criteria established by the
European Foundation for Quality Management”.
•European Gold Seal of Excellence 500+ (EFQM) 2010
•Quality Management System UNE-EN-ISO 9001:2000
•The library is certified as complying with the ISO 9001:2000 standard
and was the first Spanish Public Library to receive certification from
AENOR (Spanish Association for Standardization and Certification)
together with the Sports Service.
Research and innovation
• Research projects
The UJI is the sixth-ranked Spanish university for
R&D projects per tenured academic staff
member.
The UJI has 159 research groups with a high
scientific output: 288 research projects and more
than 578 ongoing R&D contracts with companies
in 2012.
Research
is
promoted
through
the
implementation
of
world-leading
R&D
programmes: centres such as the Institute of
Ceramics Technology, the Institute for Pesticides
and Water resources, the ESPAITEC and the
scheme to set up a State network of logistics
platforms commissioned by the Spanish Ministry
of Public Works have become a reference in this
area.
Research and innovation
Research & Development
The UJI is among the first universities in Spain in obtaining external
resources for research and development per teacher.
Promoting industrial innovation and R&D under a plan worth over
€600,000, has encouraged the creation a network service (“Xarxa de
serveis”), a set of services for the promotion of scientific and
technological work in local businesses.
In collaboration with the mobility support services of the seven
universities in the Valencian Community, the network of Valencian
universities for the promotion of research, development and
innovation (RUVID) can provide information and advice to foreign
researchers who move to Castelló to conduct research.
