Northern line Update
Merton Public Transport Liaison Committee Meeting
10 March 2011
Northern line - overview
•
Busiest line on Tube network – around
850,000 journeys per day and one sixth of
all journeys on network
•
6 branches, most complex and challenging
manually operated railway in Europe
•
91 trains in service at peak times – highest
number of any Tube line
•
Most Northern line stations have been
modernised (except where major station
upgrade happening eg Tottenham Court
Road)
•
Northern line consistently now one of
our best performing lines...
Northern line upgrade
•
Signalling upgrade is the next big
improvement to come
•
New computerised signalling and control
system, meaning trains can be driven
automatically, faster and closer together
Result = customers have faster, more
frequent and reliable train service
Main benefits:
– 20% additional capacity
– Significant boost to reliability
– 18% reduction in journey time
•
•
•
Without the upgrade, performance will
deteriorate due to life expired assets
and increasing demand meaning
greater late running and delay
Where are we now?
•
Original programme of works was highly disruptive and involved many weekend
and early evening closures – we therefore cancelled programme when Tube
Lines was acquired by TfL last summer
•
Since then we have been reviewing how to undertake the work, looking at totally
re-engineering how it will be carried out
•
Aim = come up with a programme that minimises disruption and provides
value for money for Londoners, with the upgrade finished by 2014
•
In meantime, some work has been continuing - progress to date: installation
35% achieved, train fit-out 100% complete
•
As soon as we can confirm details of the new programme we will let you know
•
Some requirement for other essential engineering work (not directly related to the
upgrade) eg non-stopping at Tottenham Court Road to facilitate the station
upgrade
Keeping you informed
•
Continuing to provide
comprehensive communications
to customers and stakeholders
•
Recently launched new ‘Tube
Upgrade Plan’ communications
campaign to provide even more
information about what we’re
doing to transform the Tube
•
Includes blogs, videos and
detailed explanations about
what’s achieved following some
of our closures
