General Remarks
We are committed to increasing diversity and
achieving the educational benefits that result from
diversity.
Key Activities that Contribute To Diversity
Federally Sponsored Projects
September 27, 2007
You must comply with the requirements for
participation in federally sponsored programs that
seek to promote diversity.
Do not impose limitations beyond those required
by the federal grant.
Federal sponsoring agencies modified their
requirements in response to legal changes.

NSF Review Criterion
September 27, 2007
Broader Impacts
How well does the activity advance discovery and understanding
while promoting teaching, training, and learning?
How well does the proposed activity broaden the
participation of underrepresented groups (e.g.,
gender, ethnicity, disability, geographic, etc.)?
To what extent will it enhance the infrastructure for research and
education, such as facilities, instrumentation, networks, and
partnerships?
Will the results be disseminated broadly to enhance scientific and
technological understanding?
What may be the benefits of the proposed activity to society?

Some Conclusions
Minority students (64%) were more likely than nonminority (42%) to say that
direct mail was very valuable for trying to decide on a college.
Minority students (50%) were more likely than nonminority (32%) to
carefully read all materials from colleges in which they were already
interested, and minority students (19%) were more likely than nonminority
(9%) to carefully read all materials from colleges they had not considered
attending.
A higher percentage of minority students (34%) than nonminority (27%)
believed that the best time for receiving information from colleges was in the
fall of their sophomore year or before.
Minority students were more likely than nonminority to have learned about
colleges through college fairs, books such as The College Handbook, and
computers in school.
