2358 The number of men and women who have
deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not
negligible. This inclination, which is objectively
disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial.
They must be accepted with respect, compassion,
and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination
in their regard should be avoided. These persons
are called to fulfill God's will in their lives and, if
they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the
Lord's Cross the difficulties they may encounter
from their condition.

Corinthians 6:10
You know perfectly well that people who do
wrong will not inherit the kingdom of God:
people of immoral lives, idolaters,
adulterers, catamites, sodomites, thieves,
usurers, drunkards, slanderers and
swindlers will never inherit the kingdom of
God. These are the sort of people some of
you were once, but now you have been
washed clean, and sanctified, and justified
through the name of the Lord Jesus Christ
and through the Spirit of our God.

Research
Welcome to the National Association for
Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH)
-- a non-profit, educational organization dedicated
to affirming a complementary, male-female model
of gender and sexuality.
NARTH, founded in 1992, is composed of
psychiatrists, psychoanalytically informed
psychologists, certified social workers, and other
behavioral scientists, as well as laymen in fields
such as law, religion, and education.

Getting it Straight
What Causes Homosexuality?
1. How Many Homosexuals are There?
2. Are Homosexuals a Disadvantaged
Minority?
3. Is Homosexuality a Health Risk?
4. Do Homosexual Parents Pose Risks to
Children?
5. Is There a Link between Homosexuality
and Sexual Abuse?
Defining Homosexuality
Homosexuality is a symptom
– Defensive response to
present conflicts
– Reaction to unresolved
childhood trauma
– Reparative drive to fulfill
unmet homo-emotional needs
Homosexuality is an emotionally based
condition
Need for same-sex parent’s love
Need for gender identity
Fear of intimacy with someone
of the opposite sex
Homosexuality is a Same-Sex Attachment
Disorder
Detachment from same-sex parent
Detachment from same-sex peers
Detachment from one’s body
Detachment from one’s gender
Same-Sex Attachment Disorder (SSAD)
Causes of Same Sex Attraction
There is no evidence that it is
genetically caused.
The consensus is that it is a
combination of social, biological,
and psychological factors.
Even if it were genetic….
Weak Gender Identity
Weak Masculine Identity
•Low athletic ability
• Rejection by Peers
• Father is distant, critical
selfish, angry or alcoholic
Weak Feminine Identity
• Mother conflicts
• Peer rejection
• Poor body image
Childhood Sexual Abuse
“From May 1989 through April 1990, 1,001
adult homosexual and bisexual men
attending sexually transmitted disease
clinics were interviewed regarding
potentially abusive sexual contacts during
childhood and adolescence. Thirty-seven
percent of participants reported they had
been encouraged or forced to have sexual
contact before age 19 with an older or
more powerful partner; 94 percent
occurred with men...
Cont.
Median age of the participant at first
contact was 10; median age difference
between partners was 11 years. Fifty-one
percent involved use of force; 33
percent involved anal sex. Black and
Hispanic men were more likely than white
men to report such sexual contact. Using
developmentally based criteria to define
sexual abuse, 93 percent of participants
reporting sexual contact with an older or
more powerful partner were classified as
sexually abused.”
Sexual Abuse and Lesbianism
Paulk notes, "An astounding 90 percent
experienced some form of abuse
themselves." This abuse was not just
sexual but included emotional abuse (70
percent), sexual (more than 60 percent),
and verbal abuse (more than half of
those surveyed.)

Levels of Promiscuity
“The Kinsey Institute published a
study of homosexual males living
in San Francisco which reports
that 43 percent had sex with 500
or more partners, 28 percent had
sex with 1,000 or more partners,
and 79 percent said that over
half of their sex partners were
strangers.”

Dutch Study Exposes Infidelity
Among Homosexual Partners
“Dr. Maria Xiridou with the
Amsterdam Municipal Health Service
has just published the results of her
study of the spread of AIDS among
homosexuals in The Netherlands.
Her study found that even among
supposedly stable homosexual
partnerships, homosexuals have an
average of eight partners a year
outside of their allegedly
monogamous relationship.” (May 2003)
Physical Health Risks

A 1997 New York Times article reported
that a young male homosexual has about a
50% chance of getting HIV by middle age.
By 1998, 54% of all AIDS cases in America
were homosexual men and 90% of these men
acquired HIV through sexual activity.
The life expectancy for homosexual males is
from eight to 20 years less compared to
heterosexual males.
The risk of getting anal cancer soars by
4000% in those who engage in anal
intercourse.
American Psychiatric Association
In 1973 the American Psychiatric
Association removed homosexuality from
the list of mental disorders in its
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of
Mental Disorders, Second Edition
Politics of Psychiatry
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American
Psychiatric Association yielded suddenly and completely
to political pressure when in 1973 it removed
homosexuality as a treatable aberrant condition. A
political firestorm had been created by gay activists
within psychiatry, with intense opposition to normalizing
homosexuality coming from a few outspoken psychiatrists
who were demonized and even threatened, rather than
scientifically refuted. Psychiatry's House of Delegates
sidestepped the conflict by putting the matter to a vote
of the membership, marking the first time in the history
of healthcare that a diagnosis or lack of diagnosis was
decided by popular vote rather than scientific evidence
(p. 9).
Psychological Health Risks
“Numerous conflicts make homosexual
behaviors abnormal, including rampant
promiscuity, inability to maintain
commitment, psychiatric disorders and
medical illnesses with a shortened life
span.”

Universal need for Chastity
2339 Chastity includes an apprenticeship in selfmastery which is a training in human freedom.
The alternative is clear: either man governs his
passions and finds peace, or he lets himself be
dominated by them and becomes unhappy. "Man's
dignity therefore requires him to act out of
conscious and free choice, as moved and drawn in
a personal way from within, and not by blind
impulses in himself or by mere external
constraint. Man gains such dignity when, ridding
himself of all slavery to the passions, he presses
forward to his goal by freely choosing what is
good and, by his diligence and skill, effectively
secures for himself the means suited to this
end."
Call to Chastity
2359 Homosexual persons are
called to chastity. By the virtues
of self-mastery that teach them
inner freedom, at times by the
support of disinterested
friendship, by prayer and
sacramental grace, they can and
should gradually and resolutely
approach Christian perfection.

Is Change Possible?
“The Spitzer report from the Archives
of Sexual Behavior … surveyed exhomosexuals who were out of the
lifestyle for five years, and it found
that 64% of the men and 43% of the
women considered themselves to be
heterosexuals after they received
treatment. Dr. Spitzer of Columbia
University led the task force of the
American Psychiatric Association in
1973 that removed homosexuality from
our diagnostic manual.”
