Origins

The United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC) is a
high-quality centre of excellence in learning and
training services supporting the UN system in achieving
its objectives and building its capacities, while focusing
on a number of strategic areas.

The College itself began operations
in 1996 as a project entrusted
to the ITC/ILO.

1 January 2002 the College
began its operations as a
distinct institution within the
United Nations system.

Assisting UN organizations and staff to:

Develop skills and competencies necessary for their work
at the inter-agency level;

Provide strategic leadership and management

Promote positive change in the UN system within the context
of ongoing UN reform;

Enhance expertise in the area of learning, training and staff
development.

The College works at an inter-agency level to serve multiple
organisations without duplicating learning and training
activities of other UN agencies.

course”
– An on-line course addressing common induction needs of
new UN staff, focusing on the UN as a whole and the
various interagency linkages

“Young Professionals Orientation Programme”
– A residential 2-weeks induction course for JPOs (Oct)

“UN Fellows Workshop: Tools for development
cooperation”
– A residential 2-weeks induction course for UN Fellows
(Dec)

Closer ties, increased coherence

The Learning Managers’ Forum
– Addressing common challenges, sharing best
practices, facilitating dialogue among learning chiefs
and fostering interagency collaboration for more than
a decade.

The UN Learning Community
– A strong Community of Practice (CoP), which has
become a key reference point for discussion,
requests and collaboration on training and learning
management for UN and UN-affiliated organizations.

Strategic development activities:

“What a UN evaluator needs to Know”
– Developed and conducted in partnership with UNEG,
an introductory course on what is evaluation and how
it is designed and managed.
(Regional courses regularly)

“Evaluation and Impact Assessment of
Learning and Training” (EIA)
– A 3 days course organized in partnership with
Dr. Jack Phillips, from the ROI Institute.
(June and November)

A new on-line communities platform
– Upgrading the services and management capabilities
offered to the UN learning community, while
ensuring seamless transition in user experience.

Fostering growth of sustainable agencyspecific blended learning induction solutions
– Supporting increased coherence of staff orientation
processes through a customizable on-line platform
integrating common UN orientation content with
agency-owned specific content, to be used as a
component of blended learning strategies.
