PARENTAL ENGAGEMENT IN SCIENCE
Light and Colour

AIMS OF THE SESSION
• To celebrate the festivals of Diwali and Bonfire night
• To improve parental engagement in science, allowing
parents and carers to provide better support for their
child in home learning of science.
• This in turn will improve the learner’s achievement and
understanding of the subject, and raise awareness of
the applications of science.
SAFETY
• You will be using various chemicals
• Please wear goggles at all times
• Stand up when doing practical work
OUTLINE OF THE SESSION
• Welcome an introduction
• Open with a bang (hydrogen balloons)
• Flame tests
• Displacement reactions
• Making white light (extension)
• Word hunt in the dark
• Flaming Teacher!
• Raffle

LIGHTING A BUNSEN BURNER
• Ensure chimney is closed
• Pupil get a splint
• Light splint from nearest
Bunsen Burner
• Take back
• Parent/carer turn the gas
on
FLAME TESTS
If you get stuck or need
help, hold up your red card
If you have finished hold up
your green one!
• Used to find out the identity of unknown powders
• Turn to blue flame
• Take damp splint, collect powder
• Hold in flame
• Record colour
• Find out which powder matches ‘X’
SPARKLERS!
• Take a splint
• Roll in glue
• Roll in iron filings
• Roll in copper
sulphate
• Hold in flame
DEMO- FIREWORKS
• Fire works are made from the chemicals used in
the flame test, just a little bit more!
DISPLACEMENT REACTIONS

Some elements are more reactive than others,

They ‘push’ others out of a compound
•
We can find out which is the most reactive

• Place a piece of
metal in a well
• Drop on a solution
• Record the colour
of the metal and
solution, at the
start and the end
