Unpacking the needs of the individual
Crannog: A profile of promising practice
Who de we work with?
Currently:
• Working with 60/65 excluded and vulnerable
Young People aged 12 – 16 across Dumfries
and Galloway
• Three bases each with a project team that
includes Manager; Social Education Workers
(general and specific remits e.g. substance use /
Youth Justice); Teachers
Aberlour Child Care Trust
What do we do?
• Community based support, working from project bases and schools
to increase educational attainment and promote social inclusion
• Programmes (delivered to individuals and groups) include work on
SQA programmes; ASDAN ( a validated alternative curriculum);
literacy and numeracy; anger management; thinking and problem
solving skillls; parenting; substance misuse reduction; interpersonal
/ communication skills
• Programmes are intensive and lengthy following an 8 weeks
assessment (approx) – recognising that long standing problems
respond better to intensive input over a sustained period. Average
length of programme is 18 months; attendance rates are over 90%
• Young People are seen 3/4 times a week and daily attendance is not
uncommon
Aberlour Child Care Trust
It’s essential that…
• Young people who are excluded remain on the role of
the host school – assists reintegration and provision of
curricular materials
• Flexible and peripatetic support designed to assist
access to education; not based on the provision of a long
term alternative to school
• We actively seek opportunities for YP and their families
to be involved in school events and/or related activities in
their communities
• Evaluation, Evaluation, Evaluation
