CIGRE SC B5 Protection and Automation
ORGANIZZAZIONE
Study committee B5 covers principles, design, applications, coordination,
performance and asset management of:
- System Protection;
- Substation Control and Automation;
- Remote Control Systems and Equipment;
- Metering Systems and Equipment;
All technical, organisational and economical aspects are considered including
staff education and training.
Emphasis is placed on design and application of digital technology and modern
integrated system approach including hardware and software for the acquisition of
system state information, local and remote data communication, and execution of
control commands.

Topic: Towards the power system of the future;
Title: The automation of the future networks: from the substation automation to the grid
automation.
Some real examples showing how the adoption of digital technology and international
standards can contribute to integrate new functions, related to the grid control, in the
substation control system (load shedding, local balancing, WAMS,WAP).
The use of the IEC 61850 model for the exchange of information between transmission,
distribution and generation plants.

Title: Coordination of protection and control of future network
The impact of increasing grid load, new types of equipments such as FACTS, SVC, Power
Storage and Dispatchable Loads, Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and Dispersed
Generation (DG) on the protection and control systems and the need for their modification
and adaptation.

B5.42: Experience concerning availability and reliability of DSAS
- Collection of experience feedback for Digital SAS, focused on availability and
reliability, based on an end-user survey;
- Classification of information according to specification, design, development,
hardware, software, testing, operation, maintenance, evolution, project
documentation;
- Recommendations for users, vendors and system integrators applicable to SAS
specification, design, architecture, operation and maintenance and related utility
organisation.
