Assistants are estimated by 6500 FMD incidence No FMD cases have been registered since 2002 The Directorate of Animal Health conduct annually many surveys but there are no cases have been detected. All ( PCR – Ag Det – NSP ELISA Tests ) were negative An annually serological surveillance is conducted to evaluate the antibodies of the adopted and used vaccine strains in Syria ( A iran 05 – O Psn Asia 2 - Asia1 ) after vaccination. An annually serological surveillance is conducted to survey the nonstructural proteins for FMD virus NSP –ELISA Test The undertaken procurers to prevent the entry of this disease to Syria *In Syria there is a developed lab in the Directorate of Animal Health divided into three Departments as the following : - Serological Department (Ab Det ELISA Test – Ag Det Elisa Test – NSP ELISA Test ) . - PCR Department. - Cell culture department. *A national contingency plan have been prepared to protect, prevent and control this disease and all the required procedures have been undertaken in case of the diseases entry to the country. * There is a developed epidemiological unite * Vet. Quarantine and disinfection strict procedures have been applied on border points and the smuggling have been banned. * Central committees conduct visits to Al Badia and the provinces to acknowledge with the health status of animal wealth herds. * Animal Wealth protection law 29/2006 determines the required legislations concerning animal wealth protection The undertaken procurers to prevent the entry of this disease to Syria *An immediate notification system is available as well as periodically ,monthly, quarter, half annually and annually reports. *Scientific brochures , symposiums and lectures of this disease have been prepared to increase vets’ and breeders’ awareness. *Slaughter houses control and immediate notification of any suspected cases within these slaughter houses. *Follow up the healthy status in the neighboring and region countries. Vaccination *Cattle vaccination is applied twice a year, but sheep is vaccinated one a year only and this vaccination is obligatory and free of charge. *The used strains in vaccination are following: ( O Pan Asia2 - Asia1- A Iran 05). *Strains are determined according to the healthy status of the country , the international organizations and the reference labs. * Serological surveillances for cattle and small ruminants have annually conducted to determine the level of the antibodies after vaccination Progressive Control Pathway Syria have participated in MTF/003/EEC project Syria was always ready all the last years within PCP(Stage 2- Stage 3)evaluation to prepare a national strategy to control FMD and submit it to OIE, including the required information of FMD status in Syria and to participate in the international and regional road map in cooperation with the international and regional organizations and the countries of the region to control FMD and prevent its spread and then to notify the freedom of it. The healthy veterinary authorities in Syria face a difficulty in providing their labs with some necessary diagnostic materials such as ( Ab – Det Elisa Test) as well as some equipments as Sequencer – GIS. The healthy veterinary authorities in Syria need experts in this respect to train the veterinary staff in their labs and this staff need the required training in the reference labs as well . Socio- Economic impact of FMD *Animal Wealth is of great importance in the Syrian economy and forms 18.6% of the national income. *Workers in animal wealth sector are estimated by 20% of the labor force in Syria. *Workers in agriculture sector are estimated by 8000.000 millions. *The annual income of agriculture production is 362120 million Syrian pounds (m.s.p). *The annual income of animal production is 129237 m.s.p. Socio- Economic impact of FMD * The government offers all the required support to animal health breeders and in particular fodder, vaccines and treatments. * Vet authorities undertaken all the required procedures to prevent the disease entry the country due to its importance and effect in economy.
