
One tradition is the Ute bear dance. The bear promised that the Ute danced the bear dance that their
hunters would find prey
and there women would have many children. For hundreds of
years today, the Ute have welcomed spring with this dance.

Ute women carried babies in cradleboards made from willows. it’s oval frame was wide at the top and it
narrowed to the bottom.
What did they eat
The Utes were hunter gatherers, and moved from place to place frequently as they gathered food
for there families. Ute men hunted deer, elk, buffalo and small game like jackrabbits (which
provided most of there food, clothing and blankets). Ute women gathered roots, pine nuts,
seeds, berries, and fruit, which they sometimes dried.
Where did they live
For many years the Ute lived in brush shelters. Each one held about twelve people. However after
they were introduced to horses they began living in tepees as the horses were able to carry the
tepees from camp to camp as the Ute hunted.
