Schram Mission Statement
Professional Athlete Analogy
Imagine that the sports world changes
as quickly as the technology world.
One week football is the in sport.
Next week it is basketball.
The week after it is baseball.
New sports are being invented all the time. There are no more
professional football players or professional basketball players.
What we have now are professional athletes who have
no idea what they will be playing next week.
Question: Is there anything these athletes can do to prepare?
Professional Athlete Analogy
All athletes need:
• Endurance
• Strength
• Flexibility
• Coordination
• Attitude
Professional Athlete Analogy
All technology students need:
• Endurance
• Logical Thinking
• Attention to Detail
• Ability to Focus
• Attitude
Rule #1
Be Ready and Focused!
At the beginning of class…
 Laptop on desk, closed & plugged in with your charger.
 USB Jumpdrive inserted.
 Only computer science materials on desk.
 Look at screen for today’s instructions.
Rule #2
Be Respectful.
 Stand when an adult enters the room.
 Say “Yes sir” or “Yes Mr. Schram.”
 Speak politely or don’t speak.
 Respect other’s property.
 Respect your school.
Rule #3
Remain Seated
and Quiet.
 Lecture
• In assigned seat – Only 1 person speaks at a time.
 Lab Practice / Group Work
• May move to another seat (No sitting on floor).
• Talk quietly on lab related topics.
 All Graded Labs, Quizzes, Tests
• In Assigned Seat – Total Silence
 PA Announcement
• Everyone stops what they are doing – Total Silence
Rule #4
No Video Games!
You are here to work and to learn.
You are not here to play games.
Video games are never allowed.
The ONLY exception are the students in AP® Computer
Science and Advanced Graphics who are actually learning
to create their own video games.
This is the official policy of JPIIHS.
Rule #5
No eating in class.
Food is only to be eaten in the Dining Hall.
Unless there is a special event sponsored by the school,
food is not allowed in the classroom.
Students may only drink bottled water in class.
Rule #6
No Late Work!
Assignments will NOT be accepted late.
If there are extenuating circumstances, talk with me.
If I allow you to make up the assignment, I will enter an
“M” in the gradebook which is a temporary 0 until the
assignment is made up. In most cases however, when
an assignment is not turned in on time, a 0 is entered
WHICH IS PERMANENT.
Rule #7
Be your best.
The world is full of mediocre people.
JPIIHS, Colleges and future employers are looking for
excellence, not mediocrity.
If your best is not good enough, see one of the Schrams
for some tutoring.
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous,
talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve
the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so
that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to
make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not
just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own
light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission
to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our
presence automatically liberates others.”
--- Marianne Williamson, from her book A Return to Love
Rule #8
Head Phones
put away and
Cell Phones Off!
Inappropriate electronic devices will be confiscated
and turned into the office.
Rule #9
Follow the AHC & AUP.
One of the most important lessons for teenagers is
that your life can be ruined by ONE BAD DECISION.
I have seen high school students charged with felonies and
even a junior high student get in trouble with the FBI for
improper computer use.
Rule #10
Remember that this is a
Catholic School.
Remember to be respectful at all times to each other and to the
faculty and staff.
Remember to be reverent whenever we are praying or in Mass.
Also remember that it is NOT good enough to simply avoid doing
what is wrong. You must make an effort to do what is right.
"Once upon a time a
man was driving
through the city at night
and saw a child in
tattered clothing,
shivering in the cold as
she rummaged through
the garbage for food.
The man prayed to GOD
and said, 'God, why
don't you do anything to
help her?' Much to his
surprise, GOD answered
and said,

I created you!'"
Makeup Work
Makeup work is the STUDENT’S
responsibility.
Place any paper makeup work in the
IN-BOX for your class period.
Make sure your teacher is notified IN WRITING
when electronic makeup work is completed.
Where you may and may not walk
Computer Use Policies
Always bring your laptop and charger.
You may NOT borrow someone else’s charger.
Laptop is always closed at the tardy bell.
Place name on laptop and charger.
(Mr. Schram will provide printed labels for both laptop and charger)
Desktop taskbar may never be hidden.
Do not alter computer settings, which are
required for computer science instructions.
Laptops must display appropriate instruction
display at all times. (explained next slide)
Appropriate Laptop Display
Laptops are used in the classroom for specific
instruction. There are only two types of
displays permitted.
First, the display on the laptop is precisely as
your teacher directs with a projector
demonstration, assignment sheet or verbal
instruction.
Second, you are working of a lab assignment
and your laptop's display is directly related to
the completion of the assignment.
Email
Students should check their
Email every evening!
Mr. Schram frequently send updates and
information to students and their parents.
This may include review information for a test,
corrections to a homework, or a link to updated
curriculum files.
Student should NOT check their Email during a
lecture or lab session.
If you are emailing a teacher, you must use your
JPIIHS email account (@jpiicardinals.org).

Homework Exercises
Short answer questions taken
directly from textbook topics.
Exercises are NOT accepted late.
Doing the exercises is an easy 100.
Not doing the exercises is an easy 0.
Quizzes
Quizzes are based on recent chapter
study material.
Many quizzes are administered by a
timed PowerPoint presentation.
Output/Review
Quizzes
Similar to normal quizzes, but
these harder quizzes deal with
program output or review
information before a test.
(In many cases they do both.)
Chapter Tests
All chapter tests are multiple choice
tests and are taken on-line with your
laptop computer.
Chapter Tests Continued
When we do an Online Test, Mr. Schram will say
“Load Internet Explorer”.
When he says this, he does not mean,
“Load your favorite web browser.”
He means “Load Internet Explorer.”
Some of the features we use for our online test
will only work in Internet Explorer.
These features often do not work in Mozilla
Firefox or other browsers.
Several students have had to redo their exams
because they used the wrong web browser.
Essays
Students will be expected to write a few
essays on Computer Science topics.
Details will be provided for each essay.
Minor Labs
These are short labs that are started
and finished in the same class period.
Students may get help with these labs.
Practice/Perform Labs
These labs have a time to practice.
During practice time, students may
receive help.
Then there is, “The Day of Reckoning”
when the student must “perform”.
Now, the students must do the lab from
scratch for a grade with no help at all.
Open Ended Lab
These are long lab assignments that
may take 2 or more days to complete.
These labs are creative.
Grades are assigned based on the
provided criteria.
Semester Projects
Semester projects are special
Open Ended Labs done at the
end of the semester.
Projects are creative.
Grades are assigned based on the
provided project criteria.

Grading Policies
As started earlier, homework exercises are NOT
accepted late! Homework that is not turned in on
time will receive a permanent grade of 0%.
Whether or not you actually did the homework is
completely irrelevant if it is not turned in on time!
Labs that are incomplete or do not compile will
receive a permanent grade of 50%.
NOTE: Projects can earn a grade as low as 0% if
they do not compile or show extremely little effort!
If you do poorly on a test, you can retake it for a
maximum grade of 78.
“OPEN”
Your laptop is open.
You can type on the keyboard.
“CLOSED”
Your laptop is COMPLETELY
closed.
No work is done on the laptop
at all.
“Half-Mast”
Your laptop is half-way closed.
This allows your teacher to
give you some quick
instructions, and then you can
get back to work.
“TABLET”
For students with a tablet PC,
this means your screen is
turned around, folded down,
and you are writing freehand
with your stylus.
All students in high school and
later on in college encounter
problems in the process of
handling required assignments.
Student success is directly
related to the ability of handling
many problems.
A student who owns a problem
must solve the problem.
Reality Check
If your laptop is the only place
where your textbook, labs and
exercises are stored, you will
be guaranteed to have issues
with required assignments
sometime during the year.
Solution #1
Your electronic textbook,
exercises, and labs must be
backed up on your USB jump
drive.
Solution #2
Carry your jump drive with
you at all times.
If your laptop is not available,
you have a backup to show to
your teacher.
Solution #3
With your jump drive you can
still work using:
A friend's computer
An Athenaeum computer
A classroom computer
Solution #4
If you have no home computer,
if you have no jump drive,
You can use a printed exercise sheet.
You can come before school,
. . . . and most importantly . . . .
you still have a voice.
You can still communicate.
Mr. L. Schram
and Mr. J. Schram
are helpful and
they are flexible.
but . . . .
they cannot do anything, if you
simply walk up the moment that
an exercise or a lab
assignment, is due, and state...
My laptop is at the tech desk
One Mr. Schram is
as good as another.
Get help when you need it.
You can come most days before or after
school.
If your teacher is not here, see the other
Mr. Schram. Either Schram can help you.
Make sure you…
always get to class on time.
always turn in your homework complete and on
time.
use practice time properly and learn how to do
the lab.
never play video games in class.
get help when you need it.
and always watch your language.
If Sister Peggy won’t say it in Mass,
then you don’t say it in class!
The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot
read or write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.
--- Alvin Toffler, from his book Future Shock
